Photos and videos in the same library

I import my photos and videos from my camera. It would be great if i could see the video clips in the Photos library along with my pictures. I pointed my Home Movies library to the same directory as my photos and that works somewhat but all directories are listed, even if they do not contain any video.

Also, normally, the downloads from my camera (pictures + videos) are about one topic. It would be nice to show them to my family on one place

Is there any way to have plex include videos in the photos library?

Kind regards,

Bart

There isn't a way to do this but definitely should be added. Something like "Event" category that will allow all sorts of media (music, photo, video or even text) should be added.

Photos and videos are two completely different types of media, not sure why anyone would want them mixed together in the same library. Don’t count on this ever being an option lol

Don't you think it makes sense to have all the "Dad's Birthday 2015" related files in one place regardless of their media types?

Thank you guys for the suggestion.  This has been asked before many times.  The problem with having different media types together is that the players are not necessarily the same so you cannot seamlessly switch from 1 to the other.  This is the same reason you cannot have different media types in a playlist.  Also, the way media is presented is different between media types, so combining 2 types would need to be reworked.  Quite a bit of coding for the server and all the clients would need to be done to accomplish this.  I cannot see this being anywhere near the top of their priorities.

Sorry, Absolutely not. When I'm in the mood to watch dad's birthday videos I don't want still images mixed in there just making things messy when I am there to view videos. If I feel like looking at photos then I know where they are, nice and neat together in a photo library. That is what makes sense. Also as moviefan stated the way the media is presented in the library. Photos or photos and videos are videos. This is why plex allows multiple libraries containing your media to keep things nice and neat and well organized. I don't see that changing.

It is understandable if you feel that it would be messy but some people do find it makes more sense to organize home media by the event/occasion instead of file types. I can't speak for Android, but iOS organizes photos and videos into one place called Collections/Moments based on time stamp and location data.(the old organization by albums and media type is still available) At first it did feel a bit strange and messy but after using it for awhile it does make sense (at least for me) and as MovieFan has mentioned, this isn't the first time something like this has been asked for, which means people do find it makes sense to have hybrid libraries.

If implemented, it can be an option so people who do find it distracting, such as yourself, can choose not to use it. Whatever that 'makes sense' to you doesn't always mean that same goes to everyone else.

I honestly don't think Plex is at a level to add feature such as this since it has lots of other problems to fix but I like the idea of Plex becoming a software that allows more flexibility to suite each users' needs. Technical challenges aside, I don't think the idea is bad. Not only the hybrid library idea can be used for something like this, but could be applied for music library with music videos and live concert footage. There is no disadvantage of having a software that is versatile as it can be as long as it is not hindered by some technical problems.

Agreed, it is a nice idea and it is not technically impossible, just very time consuming since this would impact all clients, not just the server.

Thanx all for comments! I do agree with jink0421. I think it is possible to come to a win-win situation where everybody can be satisfied.

Right now I have 2 raspberry's hooked up on my TV:

- RASPLEX for movies/music/channels/... and the great uniform experience throug all my devices

- OPENELEC with kodi, just for my slidshow with pictures and movies mixed. There is an option "Show video files in listnings" that does the trick.
So even if you don't want this feature, it can be turned off in kodi, so it wont mess up plex.4.ever's libraries.

But I hate to switch everytime my son wants to see the video's of his basketmatch and that was automatically uploaded with the token pictures in the picture library.

Technically,

maybe this could implemented by introducing a new kind of  "library", i.e. "multimedia library", where images and home videos are both presented in the file list? With its own scanner.

Or creating a new "Plex Photo Scanner" that includes video's?

Or enabling an option on the exisiting one?

Ofcourse, I don't know the impact of all this,

Just some idea's...

Kind regards,

Bart

Especially with Apples new release of their ‘Photos’ app forcing everyone to buy into cloud based storage to share photos and videos, there seems to be no simple solution to storing and organising our personal media. Plex could offer the best alternative to share personal media not just through the home wifi but via internet as well.
Plex handles my Movies and TV shows fantastically. The only reason I don’t use it for Photos is because I can’t view my videos from the same album, when they were taken together. It doesn’t need a slideshow, or play all feature. The same way that your phone does when scrolling through the camera roll, or like the playback feature on any ‘point-and-shoot’ or DSLR camera with video capabilities.
I understand that it’s way more difficult then I’m making it sound. And to some, mixing videos and pictures in the same album is ludicrous, and not ‘sorted’ at all. It’s not so much about the sorting but having the ability to present media seamlessly. (e.g showing your friends the photos and videos of your overseas trip (in the order that they appear on your camera roll)

One of the biggest problems right now is what to do with all our photos and videos. Taking them is easier than ever. So is sharing them. But storing and organizing them all and having them easily presentable is a nightmare! Plug this gap and Plex will become the best media storage, organising, and viewing solution available. Period.

Completely agree. Especially since videos tend to be shorter now. It's not like I have an hour long birthday video--I have pictures mixed in with videos of various key activities. I don't want to have to browse the images and then switch libraries when I remember there is a video I'd like to watch.

I'm fine with this not being a top priority, and I understand that there are technical challenges, but would definitely be a fan of this happening.

That being said, once this is available, I'll finally add my photos (with intermixed videos) to Plex and turn on Camera upload again. I like camera upload, but since I would have to manually upload my videos anyway, it just didn't seem necessary.

I would support this feature request as long as it is an option that I can disable.  I'm with plex.4.ever.  I would find mixed media in a library distracting, so I would likely disable the feature.

Yeah I agree. While I would appreciate this, I wouldn't want it forced on anyone...and nor should it change anyone's existing experience.

I would say that all the current libraries would stay as they are by default. And, Plex would either add new a library type or a setting (set at the individual library level) that you could check if you want to allow Videos in a Photos library.

Folks,

Adding "+1" comments does not cast a vote for the feature.  Please click "Like this" on the message #1 in the thread.

I'm really surprised this is not more requested!

I often taken a mix of photos and videos of an event and I just think of them all as photos! I would love them to appear together!

I can highly recommend using google photos _until_  :-D this features gets implemented. It mixes together everything, and does a LOAD more on top of that (they will obviously however have a copy of all your media!)

Please “like” on original post. I noticed some "+1"s here, but they do not influence ranking. On first post only 2 likes :frowning:
I think this can be better…

I would absolutely need this. Regardless of the technical difficulties, we all simply store our memories sorted by the notable event and absolutely not by filetype. I certainly wonT replicate my folder sturucture just to have videos separately. If I go to a holiday I copy everyting including videos in the folder named like “2015 July - Spain”.

If you want an example how others are doing this, look at Synology’s Photo Station (amazing). You view the videos (as a still frame) along with the photos and can launch the player from there.

People these days take hundreds if not thousands of photos on holidays and I can’t remember once sitting down and watching them all in one go as a photo slideshow. What you want are large thumbnails (like Google+ Photos) and you may or may not enlarge some photos you want to have a look at. Or play the videos.
…that is what I think, cheers.
