I would like to see a library where your TV shows and Movies are listed/categorized under a sigle library.
For example, I have a bunch of military documentaries that are known Movies and TV show series (i.e. Restrepo --> movie, and Off To War --> tv series). I keep them in a single folder listed as "military documentaries". When I create the library, I can only choose one type or the other if I want proper categorization and display (i.e. box art, information, etc.). If I select it as "Home Videos", then the categorization is shown as individual videos with no box art or information, nor grouped into a TV Series.
The only workaround I've found is to create two separate libraries (one for TV and one for Movies) and then create a Playlist for "Military Documentaries". But why can't we have both under one library? Hence my request.
I think this is a good question. I own the entore Box-set of MAS*H, which is a movie followed by a series. Many series have made movies afterwards (X-files, 24, etc.), so the line is already blurring…
Most TV show movies are added as Specials in TheTvDb. You can put these in a subfolder called Specials named S00Exx where xx is the number that TheTvDb assigns to that film. The Stargate SG-1 series is a good example. The two followup movies (Ark of Truth and Continuum) are episode 7 and 8 of the specials season.
Battlestar Galactica's miniseries is another. The 2-episode mini series along with the in-series and after-series films are all specials.
this solution does not work because all Specials are grouped under the SPECIALS collection of a serie and you can’t know what order they must be seen. An example is Psycho Pass. Special 12 must be seen after Season 1. special 13,14 and 15 must be seen after season 2 and special 16 must be seen after season 3. Plex simply puts them in a row.
Also, this way movies are treated like tv shows (no director, no actors, not the real poster but a still frame randomly picked). To me this is not a decent solution.
I have the same problem with ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ for The Sopranos. It shows up on thetvdb.com under Movie, not Series, and doesn’t have an S00Exx id available. Plex ignores it when I scan my TV Shows. I don’t want this to be categorized in Plex as under Movies as it BELONGS on that specific Series.
Some shows list their related movies as specials. (see also some of the remarks above – though that doesn’t seem the case for your example).
As an alternative you can create a Sopranos collection in both your TV Show and Movie libraries. This will also link both items.
My Movies are one 5TB removable drive and my TV Shows are on a completely different one. I don’t have room to plug in the 2 drives at the same time.
This is the only TV Series movie I have that DOESN’T have an S00Exx ID on thetvdb.com, just a numeric Movie ID. Plex → TV Shows doesn’t pick it up when I do a scan, no matter what folder I put it in on the TV Shows drive.
I understand that this may still be considered a “workaround” but rather than using playlists, you can use Collections for this. Collections can actually contain all media types, and I’ve used them to group together related media without resorting to the “Specials Season” thing. You can add Series or Seasons to a collection called “Military Documentaries” and then add your individual movies to that Collection as well. The collection will show up in the Collections tab in both of the source libraries, and will feature all of the media you’ve added.
I have a Star Wars collection that includes movies, soundtracks, and audio dramas from different libraries. I also have some collections setup for my Japanese action shows (Kamen Rider/Super Sentai) that include individual seasons, tie-in movies, and soundtracks. Marvel movies and related TV shows are also in a collection.
Using collections doesn’t work either as I keep my series in chronological order and I can’t reorder a mixed tv and movie collection to have shows between movies.
I second this, although can see how doing so could be potentially problematic for developers, considering collections are currently tied to each respective library, unless they create a new ‘type’ of collection (e.g. like auto collections) for this kind of thing specifically.
As of now, the closest I’ve been able to do is to use the same name for a given collection that is applicable to both relevant tv shows and movies (and between libraries), so that each corresponding collection loads below.
I really want this feature, I have Documentaries, Comedy (which I personally use for stand-up and Skit Shows which I don’t want polluting my “TV Shows” folder) and Anime. It would be so much neater if we could just have a mix of both.
I’m shocked that plex doesn’t have that option when you can do this with Jellyfin. That option is a must for Documentaries, you have so many documentary movie and series, why have 2 folders.
