I think a Plex app on this thing is all I really need if I wanted to ditch Roku. I can’t be alone in feeling that, so I’m almost surprised they didn’t invite Plex on stage to demo a prototype of their app… (excepting of course they’re more interested in selling iTunes movies and tv shows).
Unfortunately the USB port is still locked down (service and support only) which for me minimizes the use of a PLEX app on the new AppleTV. It would just be a streaming device and since I already have a Mac mini hooked up to my TV directly it just seems redundant and less useful. But maybe that’s just me. Is there any advantage of having an AppleTV instead of a Mac mini? Especially since Apple will never allow access to your own external content?!
Ya I copied and pasted from that from a site, I noticed a few errors from it such as wireless n when it has wireless ac also and that it has a dual core processor. Missed that one also good catch lol. I’ll fix the OP. I’m kinda surprised no 4k myself.
I ditched my apple tv’s last year because I was tired of having to fidget with plexconnect all of the time. It broke often, usually when I was ready to relax with a movie after a long day at work .
The replacements are gaming consoles , 4 of them to be exact, and they all support Netflix, PLEX, Hulu , etc. it would be a hard sell to bring me back into the Apple TV fold. Support Plex natively would be a huge step in the right direction, though!
Honestly I think apple is a little late with their set top hardware upgrade. There’s already far superior (my opinion) devices on the market. I always prefer flexible hardware over apples offerings. I wouldn’t even own an apple tv if I didn’t get it for free from work. Even the. I only decided to get it because of plexconnect
It shouldn’t be so complex to bring a nativ Plex App to the ATV. tvOS is like iOS so they allready have the nativ app i think. For sure, a few changes will be necessary but hot so many. Maybe the UI will be a little bit different to the iPad UI. I am so happy that i don’t need the trailer hack anymore.
I think I’ll skip this one because I’m pretty sure Apple will launch atv5 with an a9 processor and slimmer design and the year after with an a10 processor and 4K playback.

Don’t hold your breath, apple does changes SLOWWwwww… and big changes even slower. Don’t count on any real hardware changes for at least 2 years from the date the ATV4 is released. So late 2017 …if were lucky. What they have done with this new ATV4 looks very promising and since its a big change all around i think that is what we get for a while. Many software updates will be released over the next few years for sure, but that’s about it. No point in waiting for just nothing to happen, just pick up the ATV4 and enjoy it for at least the next 2 long years lol If and when there is a ATV5, grab it then and sell your 4th gen.
I have a 50" UHD TV myself, but i know how apple does things very well and i know for the next few years there is nothing for me to wait for. I will be grabbing the ATV4 the day its in stores.
$199.00 is nothing to spend every few years.
Hmm… that’s just lunch money for the month at work lol
Being able to just launch a plex app would be great. But 150 bucks is 50%more than competing boxes and probably a no go. Especially since I’d be replacing an already capable box that’s in place…

The competing boxes I’ve tried so far are awful… The Roku Plex app is passible but relegated to my small bedroom tv since it’s so incredibly slow and the interface is awful at best (due to Roku’s really crippled hardware), then there’s the FireTV in my basement… the interface on the FireTV is just insanely bad and their PlexApp is just a mobile Android app scaled up which is equally awful. I haven’t used their playstation app so maybe that’s the option you’re referring to as a competing box but the playstation is more than $149 so… Not sure.
If the Plex app for the new ATV can match the fluidity and interface design niceness of the rest of what was shown for the ATV and I can get that kind of user experience for $50 more than my Roku cost me, I’m sold.

My thoughts exactly. I’d also add that the Smart TV versions of the app that I’ve used are super clunky, and while the PS3 version is nice, turning on the console then having to use the control pad to use the app is a pain, not to mention the seemingly endless and slow software updates.
No 4K support on new Apple TV? Really? It’s a no for me. Amazon, Netflix and YouTube do 4k now. Yes the HDCP chipsets are the issues, so hardware is not quite there, but come on Apple. I suppose perhaps next year, since the development of this started before 4K was ready. I think by the end of the year Comcast 4k being out, and BR 4k will change a lot of things. Most BR 4K players will support apps too. So apple missed a chance to get foot in door of those that have 4k TV’s. USB-C looks fresh, perhaps storage support down road?
I wouldn’t be surprised if the new Apple TV 4 is already capable of 4K in hardware and they chose to disable it in the software. It’s a bummer that you have to pay $150 for a new Apple TV just to get the store, when in my perfectly good working ATV 2 won’t have access to the store, therefore, I will have to keep relying on Plexconnect for the foreseeable future.
