Completely revamped Apple TV app

The Apple TV player is OLD and way outdated. It is built on the native player from tvOS which does not provide vast support for all types of files and NEEDS to be updated. The MrMC app is a good workaround but their interface is not user friendly at all. I end up going into plex to pick a movie and then into MrMC to watch a movie. MrMC can direct play 4K HDR HEVC content AND overlay subtitles separately all without transcoding. The Apple HARDWARE is capable - it’s the software that needs to be updated! Please Plex!!

+1 Still waiting on 4K HDR HEVC MKV playback on Apple TV 4k…

100% agree. The AppleTV app is suboptimal in so many areas. I find this strange because AppleTV has to be one of the most used TV-devices right? Would be nice with a word from developers on this.

Feels weird and sad to be sitting with this amazing hardware and 4K HDR TV but a stalled Plex app.

Id say that the android apps are possible the most used, closely followed by chromecast and roku…

Neither of us knows for sure. It might be as you say. I’d guess that the AppleTV is THE premium device used in a lot of homes of paying customers anyway. Let’s not derail here: The Apple TV app needs an update.

REMEMBER TO LIKE THE FIRST POST IN ORDER FOR IT TO GET UPVOTED - that’s how plex counts votes

I would love this too and your effort is admirable into kick starting this but I honestly don’t think Apple TV is a major priority for plex say compared to Android TV (Shield) for the ultimate streamer for the living room. If you ever look at plex videos their office and home cinema setup uses a shield TV and we all know that can direct play anything. So My guess is that The Apple TV will always play second fiddle to the shield TV or even the roku.

Saying all this though at least there is infuse pro that is focused only on TVOS and iOS, and luckily their video playback is great.

Infuse Beta 5.7 is very compelling… It is a shame to buy the server software and client software separately from two different agents.

In that case open source it. There are a lot of people in the apple ecosystem so it makes sense. Not having a good player on Apple TV is just lazy.

48 votes and counting - Plex needs to listen to the people!!

This needs to happen, I have put a lot of effort to make sure my movies are compatible with ATV4 subtitles and all. Sadly this breaks all functionality to all other devices that aren’t Apples. I have perfect playback of both H.264 and H.265 on my ATV but if I try and play a movie on a Chromecast it needs to transcode and the Subtitles are HUGE. A custom player really only needed to support MKV container with video: H.264/H.265 Audio: DTS/AC3 and Subtitle: SRT and 90% of all content being played on the Plex platform would be supported.

I am optimistic even though i then need to repackage all my movies, but it is a price I would gladly pay.

Infuse 5 plays 4k content just fine on the Apple TV 4k, but Plex doesn’t. Please fix so I don’t have to subscribe to Infuse and Plex. Thanks!

I mean the problem is there’s barely any bug fixes for the Apple TV Plex app! just look at today’s change log (1.28)! rename channels to plugins, seriously that’s all the Plex TVOS team have accomplished to release in one month! When that’s the case there’s definitely no hope for a custom player being created.

Hopefully Plex are indeed working on something new and then suddenly BAM! new app. Here is to hoping anyway…

Doubt it! Plex has spent such a long time on the Plex server side to implement 4K MKV direct stream for the Apple TV 4K to work(still randomly stutters) that I doubt they will bring a new app with direct play of more codecs like infuse, why spend all that effort on the server if they were going to bring a new app out.

What do your files look like? My 4K HDR MKV’s are playing just fine on AppleTV?

Did you make any changes to your PMS files? I can’t get direct stream of 1080p to work effectively on Apple TV 4, let alone get 4K to play on Apple TV 4K.

It’s not even only with 4K. Plex is transcoding every single HEVC file even on an AppleTV 4K which has HEVC support.
It bogs down my server transcoding even 720p HEVC content with one player.

Then you try Infuse, and it plays everything right away. Even has subtitle shift function which still didn’t make it into Plex. Why…do I still pay for a plex pass? Why do I even bother with Plex? You don’t even answer any questions on these forums, and there is no real support channel.

If you can’t even do 1080P, that’s been working for years… you have deeper issues. Even back on the original AppleTV4. My parents and sister Directstream HEVC 10bit 1080P .mkv files no issue on their old ATV4s.

I’m running the installer straight off plex.tv/downloads unmodified. Do you have your client configured to stream Maximum/Original quality?

What is your server? Windows? Linux? other?

This is never going to happen look at the response from a Plex employee about a different topic, funny how they didn’t respond here as well which has much bigger traction.
