congrats on the Apple TV app. Solid first release! Here are some bugs that I’ve noticed and features that I’d love to see integrated:
bug: the video preview doesn’t update while forwarding or searching backwards. Netflix has gotten this down over the internet connection so I’m hoping this can be addresses for local streaming
bug: after marking a show watched the unwatched show count won’t update until you manually hit the “reload” button
request: please allow file deletion from within the tvOS app like you are doing on the iOS app
request: please indicate on the TV show overview screen which episodes are unwatched
When finishing an episode of a to show, prompt/allow the user to start the next episode (or auto start it like the iOS app does)
(Not sure if this next one is possible as I haven’t fully read the tvos API yet) when asking Siri to "show me episodes of [tv show name] she only presents options from iTMS and Netflix. It would be good to integrate Plex content there too. Hopefully the API supports it.
All in all, I like this first release!! Already has most of the features I need and is a great launching pad to start from.
Great to see you guys on the Apple TV (4) platform. I have bought the ATV4 especially for Plex and I think it is a good start. The ATV isn’t all that great in hardware. No 4K, no DTS ect. I think the Nvidia Shield has more potential in that way, but here in Holland almost no media players are available. No Roku, No Amazon, No Shield, No Nexus Player. It is like we are in some kind of Twilight Zone and nobody is selling these boxes here in Holland. Luckily, the ATV is here. Looking at my photos is really fast in the Plex App and i love that. For all my movies transcoding is needed since I use the MKV container. It takes about 20% of my CPU Power on the server. The video and audio quality is less than my Popcorn Hour. Popcorn Hour on the other hand is not evolving and their menu structure is old fashioned. Still, they have excellent playback quality. I am kinda hoping the Nvidia Shield will have that too. Also, i am hoping you guys will give the Plex App for Apple TV your normal Plex Look in the future. I love the Theater/iPad/iPhone Look. This ATV App looks so different from the rest and in my opinion it should give that warm great Plex feeling again. Anyway. I will follow your updates and help where i can. Kind Regards, CH.
When I try to play an mkv on Apple TV 4, it plays for 5 minutes before beginning to buffer, usually hitting menu and then play is enough to get it going again, but it doesn’t remember where to carry on from. The roku 3 on the same wifi or same wired switch with the same cable does not have this issue. Also trailers for plex pass, Apple TV will play 5 seconds before buffering, the roku plays back flawlessly.
Great App and released really soon after hardware release, however I am experiencing one really annoying issue. My streaming keeps stopping! I am running Plex server on a Synology NAS (DSM 6 Beta) but I am only having this issue on Apple TV. I have 4 TVs running Plex with no issues as well as iPhones and iPads, all stream fine. It just stops with the buffering wheel showing and won’t start again and sometimes I’ll also get a ‘Error Loading Resource’ message, but if I immediately try to continue the stream to another device it will pick up with no problem, again pointing the issue to the AppleTV app. Is this a know issue? Any advice would be great.
the one thing that i desperately need, however, is a quick way to skip to the beginning of the next (or previous) chapter. i create a lot of media with chapter markers (typically for commercial breaks) and need an easy way to skip forward (or backward). using the menu from the top of the screen works, but it is neither convenient nor easy to use. for example, it does not indicate the chapter in which the media is currently playing so it’s impossible to know what the previous or next chapter is.
what i’d like: a simple way, ideally using the new Apple TV remote, to skip forward to the next (or backward to the previous) chapter.
something else that would be awesome: if the chapter menu at the top of the screen scrolled to ensure the current chapter is visible and highlighted the currently playing chapter in some way (e.g. a special color).
I have a few things after some months using Plex on the new ATV4
Every Page - Add a HOME button. Once you’re 10+ episodes drilling down into a TV show, having to hit MENU back again and again to get to the root screen is very tedious. Or exit the PLEX app totally, go to the task switcher and close it completely then reopen it.
Customizable HOME screen. Choose what sections show up, what order they are, the default sort style, turn on/off the On Deck and Recently Released (which is so random anyway.) Have each Section with a customizable main page too. Let me put the sections and sort methods I prefer as the main stuff and remove what I do not use or care for.
When in a TV Show Episode Summary or When actually watching an episode.
Add PREVIOUS and NEXT EPISODE buttons like in the PMP versions, so when you play an episode and it ends, you can just click to the Next Episode vs Clicking on Go To Season then having to scroll to the next episode. And when watching an episode if I realize I recently watched it, I could pull down the menu and skip to the beginning of the next episode.
Hi Guys. I have been using the ATV for a few months now. I have also tried the Nvidia Shield TV, but that player has too many bugs and issues. So, I have set my hopes on the ATV4 (and higher models in the future).
Of course there is the transcoding issue for me, but via Optimized Version in Plex Server there is a good work around for this and I can prevent high use of my CPU during playback.
Also since the last update I have seen an increase in playback quality.
This is best noticed during playback of (older) standard definition movies. …So, thank you…
Still I hope you guys consider giving the ATV Plex App a similar look as the iOS Plex app.
I think the iOS App is gorgeous and it has that nice Plex look.
The ATV Plex App does not have that look yet, but I bet you guys have this issues on the list.
am I the only one who experiences sync issues between picture and sound after seeking in videos on the ATV4? ATM I only tested this on MKV-Containers, but there it seems to be very consistent. After seeking forward some minutes, sound and pic are out of sync by several seconds…
I have a feature request for the already wonderful new Plex app for AppleTv. How about some customization options within the app itself. When I go into My sections whether it be Movies or TV, I want the default to be ALL, not Discover. I understand the Discover option is great for people that have their entire library available all the time, but for the rest of us make it customizable so we can either change the default or “uncheck” sections not needed. When I enter My Movies Section it would be great if it was already showing ALL Movies and not the default “Discover” section.
Thanx, and again you guys did a great job so far with this new app!
I would also like to add a request that the Apple TV app offer a bit more customization. In particular I mostly want to browse movies by genre, and currently this is shunted off in the overflow menu–with something I don’t use much, Collections, given much more prominence.
I can’t make apple TV 4 work with Plex without unwatchable stuttering. Hard wired to router. Tried all variants of settings…it will start out okay, and about 2 minutes in, get choppy. Files play perfectly on my Oppo Blu ray player (which I’ve had to start using full time because of this). Any help?
Unless I’m missing it somewhere, there’s no method to skip through an episode in a playlist? For our use case we use shuffled playlists of TV episodes often, and often want to skip to the next episode. Most other clients can do this, but with Apple from what I can tell you a) need to use the ATV’s own remote (we use a Harmony) and b) have to swipe a couple/few times to scan through the episode.
The ATV does support FF/RW and skip buttons (they’re programmed and functioning on my Harmony), is there any chance we see them implemented in the app?
