[Feature Request] All Plex clients (Web, PMP, Roku, Android) are unable to display very large photos

I have a number of photos that were scanned as very large files from slide film. These files can be over 100MB on disk. I don’t know where the breaking point is, but none of the Plex clients I have can display them (hence, this report is in General Discussions). They report “Unable to load photo” (Plex Web), or “There was a problem playing this item” (PMP). They are in tiff format, but I have several smaller tiff files that Plex has no trouble with.

So it turns out this is a designed limit, so this report should be a feature request rather than a bug. If a Ninja would like to move this to the Feature Request forum, I will re-write it to be more of a request.

There was an issue in PMS regarding this. Should be fixed in the 1.5 branch. The bug was in analyzing the file so try dancing the file for the fix to work.

Ah, good news. I’ll try it tonight.

Plex dancing the folder did not change things. Same photos will not display.

Server 1.5.2.3557

Danced again after installing Server Version 1.5.3.3580. Still no change.

There is actually a limit and photos over 100 Mb are ignored for performance reasons.

I have asked the development team to consider making this limit user configurable

Or at the very least, tell us about it. I can’t count the number of searches I’ve performed in the Help pages to see if there is a file size limit.

Thanks, @sa2000

Oh. I guess I read that fix wrong. Thanks @sa2000.

This is becoming more and more bothersome as I learn to use Lightroom. Most of my processed images, saved as TIFF files, are larger than 100 MB.

Is this limit somehow related to that silly cloud-based auto-tagging feature? If so…can said feature be manually disabled to remove the 100mb cap?

No, I think this limit has been around much longer than that.

well crap. was worth a shot.

I see Emby has no difficulty displaying these images.

@beckfield - an option is now available in advanced hidden server settings

I will let you know once it is added to the support article

Good news, thanks.

@beckfield
See

Advanced setting: TranscoderPhotoFileSizeLimitMiB
Integer value in Mibs. Default (if absent) is 100
Give it a go but don’t over do it

Thanks. Had to look up ‘mebibytes,’ (WTF??) but I’ll give it a try tonight.

It should be in units of 1024 x 1024

That’s what Megabytes was suppose to be. I blame RAM and hard drive mfg for cheating and using 1000’s.

Mebi you’re right…

FYI, to convert megabytes to mebibytes, multiply megabytes by 0.953674.

This seemed to work just fine. My largest image is about 216 MB, so I set TranscoderPhotoFileSizeLimitMiB=220 in preferences.xml and restarted PMS. Now Plex Web and Plex Roku display all my photos.
