[BUG] Black bars for movies replaced by background of said movie

Per title, watch a movie that has a wide screen aspect ratio (like 2:40:1) and instead of black bars on the top and bottom, you can see the background art that the movie uses.

Probably happens for TV shows but I don’t have any TV shows that are wide screen to test.

Can anyone confirm this? I have tested on 2 shield TVs, same results.

Just posted about this as well. My thread shows a picture with a 4:3 aspect ratio show.

Interesting bug for sure!

Let’s use this thread for tracking this issue. My thread can be reference since it has the image.

Per your question, trailers exhibit the same underscan issue. Chapters seem to be still working well for me.

Are chapters working for the main title when you enable trailers? And start a movie from the beginning?

Hmm, maybe it is working. I let a trailer actually play (instead of skipping forward) and it showed me chapters as a reward. Going to try with more than one trailer now.

If I enable trailers from the Plex app settings on my Shield, no trailer plays. If I select “Play trailer” from a movie, that works fine still.
What issue are you seeing with chapters? If I long press right or left, the chapters come up to select one. If I quick press left/right, it does the 30sec jump.

Ah, do you not have Plex pass? Plex pass automatically grabs trailers (for movies in your library or upcoming theater/Blu Ray releases) and plays then before a movie. The bug was that when these were enabled, the trailers would play one by one (in a playlist) and when it got to the main feature, the chapters for the movie would not be available.

The play trailer button you see is different.

I do have Plex pass. I honestly have never used the feature before since I know my wife would complain (some things just aren’t worth it :# ). I enabled the trailers in the app settings but it just started playing the movie. I’ll have to test more when I get back home. Just ran out for a bit.

Ok, I know what’s caused this, thanks for the bug report!

Please do an updated app push fast. My wife is blaming me right now basically using this as a catalyst to go into other things she’s been holding off on telling me about. So the sooner this is fixed the better my life will be overall lol

uninstall updates for Plex, disable automatic updates in the play store and install the last version:

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/plex-inc/plex/plex-6-4-0-1558-release/plex-6-4-0-1558-android-apk-download/

safe site, operated by Android Police

for sideloading, I use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.Xplore

I upload the apk to my drive account, then access it by using that app to navigate to my google drive

Plex Kodi app works fine meanwhile is fixed.

Experiencing the same thing here. Thought something on my end was failing. Restarted Shield, restarted server, reinstalled app, etc. Was pulling my hair out. Glad to find this post and even happier that it has been acknowledged.

If you need any logs/screenshots/or something tested let me know.

Doesn’t seem to affect 4k movies.

Thanks for the quick fix. At least it’s fixed for me on the latest update released today. Wife confirmed it

Yep, the last beta release had a fix for this, enjoy!

@roflharrison Yes, thanks for fix. But now can you please make the black bars… black instead of grey when playing HDR content, at least on Sony Bravia?

As discussed in this thread (with screenshots). They are black on other players (Kodi, Sony’s Video, VLC beta).
