I've brought this up before, and from discussion with people, I may be a dinosaur, but I really like listening to whole albums in order.
When I use iTunes, I have it set up to do album-level shuffle, so it picks a random album after the current one finishes. That is: Pick a random CD, play it, now pick another, play it, etc.
It would be amazing if Plex could do this, either through the iTunes plug-in, or through its own music library.
Hey, now that we have shuffle available, can we get shuffle setting to do album-level shuffling?
Â
iTunes has a very simple interface to turn on this feature. Â
I'm not sure if this would be a server-side, or client-side feature. Â I would be happy to move this post to correct forum if anyone knows.
I, too, would adore this feature. I really don't understand why more music apps don't support it. I guess a lot of people just don't have the habit of listening to whole albums and aren't familiar with the joy of "picking a random CD and popping it in." It's so last century I guess :P
I would love this too. I personally find it useful for when I don't quite know what I want to listen to, but shuffling my whole library just makes a lot of weird transitions like Taylor Swift suddenly followed by the Theme to Jaws or something like that.
Count me in too. It’s a feature I regularly use on iTunes and, as a new user of plex, feel it is a glaring omission with plex. It is possible to list by artist, album and tracks - the shuffle should respond accordingly - shuffle by artist, album or track depending upon the display.
I was disappointed as well that this feature doesn’t exist. In the iOS app I figured if I switched to album view and clicked the shuffle it would behave as OP described. Would make sense to do a track randomizing in “track” view and maybe even randomly select an artist and play their discography in “artist” view. I don’t play a lot of music in Plex yet but I’m trying to shift to using it full time and this is a pretty big blocker… I assume this is all something that needs to be implemented on the app side rather than in PMS?
I used to have it on my creative labs mp3 player about 10 years ago and it was the easiest way for me to find new music or rediscover bands. The only thing that I would add to this is to combine this feature with something similar to the TV/Movie feature of tracking what I’ve listened to and where I’m at in an album. This way 1) I can start from the same place later on any device 2) I can track what I’ve listened to 3) I could set up the random button to only select songs/albums/artists that I have never listened to
I am considering a wholesale shift to Plex, and the lack of this feature is a potential showstopper for me. I’d be a Lifetime Plex Pass subscriber in a flash if this were available…
I would also really enjoy being able to shuffle albums, and play just the first song of the album. When I hear one I really am in the mood for, then click unshuffle and listen to the entire album. Used to be able to do this on my Empeg player and I really miss it.

I’ve got an EMPEG in my car still Had high hopes for an offline Plex client to finally give me a reason to retire it but still nothing quite matches its flexibility in play lists/modes.
I’m finding it hard to believe that shuffle-by-album isn’t available yet! For us fogies who remember what albums are, this feature would be, like, groovy man! Is there some sort of technical road block keeping this feature out or is it just that there aren’t enough old folk that have figured out how to use the forums and request this feature? It would be great to at least see some indication as to whether this is on the horizon or if I should go back to my rocking chair and forget about it…
I think this would be great to have as well, and am honestly not really sure why it’s not there already. This can’t be that difficult. I’d also love to be able to actually access the entire play queue, and not just like the next 20 tracks. How hard can this stuff be really?
