[implemented] Movie Collections

It would be awesome if there was a way to group movies for instance all bond movies or all harry potter movies under one icon that breaks out with all the movies.... also there should be a way to manually sort these "folders" by movie order rather than name

What client are you using?

Plexweb and most client should have a feature called "Collections" that let you group movies this way. Note this is a sorting category it doesn't stack them in one icon in normal browsing.

Also every movie has a "Sort Title" you can edit in plex web so that you could for example have the display titles Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, but with the sort titles Alien 1, Alien 2, Alien 3, Alien 4 to ensure they where in the correct order.

To enable automatic collection on new movies added go to Settings, Plex Media Server, Agents, Movies then find the   The Movie Database agent and click on the gears icon, make sure Use collection info from The Movie Database is enabled

Great its good to know that and I have created collections now, but they still all show under movies, more what I meant was to make it like the shows section where you select a movie series then under that it has all of the series. this would really help to remove clutter

Wow.

I too never knew of the collections and movie database option.

Thanks for the tip Lazybones!

Hi 1+ here

How did you guys get to collections part ?

Also does it mix it with normal movies ?

I like boxset or collections option but can’t get it working or know how to add it

Thanks

I would like an mixed view, too. Collections shown among the single films. Mayby as setting to chose. James Bond, Harry Potter, Star Trek ... I don't need to see all included films in the overview.

But I fear it will be not that easy, because there are so many collections comimg with the scraping and the option to add more than one collection to a film.

I have allready seen such a mixed view somewhere ... YAMJ maybe?

What you are asking for is what YAMJ and XBMC offer in some skins:  movie sets within movie lists.  Neither of these are true client/server implementations, though and do not have to worry about supporting the broad range of clients that Plex does.

In many ways, I feel like this is one behavior that tends to be more "what I'm accustomed to" instead of "what I want/need" in the interface.  I came over from XBMC and there were a lot of downsides to trying to accommodate the mixed boxset view that resulted in fairly odd behaviors at times.  Personally, I much prefer being able to pick the view by going to the list of movies or the list of collections.

My only additional enhancement would be a separate sort title for use within collections.  For example, being able to see the movies in their individual order within the movies section, but chronologically in a "Univeral Monsters" collection or other collections.

I don't really see how a mixed view would be an issue as Plex already implements essentially this same feature in the TV shows section by breaking it into show then season than episode. As movies don't have seasons or episodes I fell it would be a very easy implementation on both the client and server side.

I've never had issues with XBMC's collections showing in the main window. One of the reasons I still use XBMC. I swear this was already a feature request though?

I like this idea, and I too didn't know about the "The Movie DB" trick.

This seems similar to a Feature request I made a little while back, let me know what you think: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/57501-easier-movie-series-navigation/

I'm missing something.

Using web management of Plex .9.8.6, I have The Movie database options for Movies library to "Use collection info from TheMovieDatabase".

I then analyzed my collection (this was needed a few days ago anyway due to wanting my files Trick Indexed"

When I select filters, by Collection, no list appears.

What step(s) am I missing?

I would love to see collections displayed as an optional part of the main feed.  Maybe have an option to 'turn collections on" and then instead of seeing Halloween 1 through 500  ;) listed separately, you would see a 'collection' called Halloween.  When chosen, you would then see 1 through 500 listed.

IMO, this would be much better than a menu on the side.

Yeah that's the way it works with XBMC. I love it.

The Above is exactly what I mean except maybe the cover art that is shown in plex could be an amalgamation of 4 of the movies in the collection that cycle

Collections would be great as my movie list wouldn't have me jumping through all 23 James Bond movies every time. ;)

As said above, from a user perspective it isn't different from a show's hierarchy.  In fact it would be on less level then a shows.

And when a movie belongs to multiple collections? I know how t works in XBMC. I like separate collections far more.

I would love to see this.  I am using collections for now, but still see as many movies listed under movies as I have whereas I'd want to only see one parent.  Also, if you create a sort order for movies that are not titled similarly, then your library can appear out of order.  eg: Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, etc.

I want this too!

I agree I want the collections to go into a sub sections such as Harry Potter then when i select it, it lists the movies out. Would be a great feature.

I would really like this feature as well. The collections are a nice option, but they serve a different purpose. Most often I use the main movie listing, and I want to have movies grouped in that listing.
