Auto Movie Collections

I really would like to have the option to autosort movies into Movie Sets and list them in the clients in the “All Movies” section as collections (Not the manual PMS Collection feature).

e.g. James Bond, Harry Potter, Terminator, …

This isn’t a bad idea, particularly if there’s already a “I don’t have to type anything” data set available.

In the mean time it would be nice if there was a mutli-select way to add things to collections. (If there is and I’m being daft let me know) so it doesn’t take an hour to add 20 movies to a collection.

I like it!

This would be awesome! Knowing that there is a MovieDB API for this, it seems like it could be fairly easy to implement! Fingers crossed.

This would be really nice. I’m a plex-evengalist for some years now, but since I have a linux desktop around these days I took a look at XBMC-eden . And the auto-movie-collection feature was a nice surprise, would love to see it in Plex to.

I think this would be a great enhancement

Aye

Always liked the thought of this as after I had to completely wipe my mac I lost all the collections I made from a previous library. Have not bothered making another collection since.

you have my vote!

There is a way to select and create collections in Plex but it will not affect the display at all unless you use the Collection filter on the front end.

And even with the filter on your just filtering out the stuff that are not in that collection it never actually displays one Ico for the entire collection.

What is being asked for is something similar to the way the TV section works...One Icon per show and when you click you see the seasons of that show available...

For Movies you would see one Icon per collection and then when clicked on see all the movies that are part of it.

Makes for a nice and tidy Movie interface as some collections (like Indiana Jones  lets say) don't all have movies that show up together (Raiders is never with the others unless you filter out everything but the IJ collection)

So this is something I would really like to see done either by default or as a viewtype config in the interface,

You can use Sort Title to resolve that.  Each of the Indiana Jones movies has a sort title of "Indiana Jones YEAR" so that they show up in the right place and in the right order.  This is especially helpful with movie series that have reboots (Star Trek, Batman).

The idea of stacking the movies as you suggest is fairly specific to one client:  PHT.  Other clients are not as likely to interpret that multi-level stacking as well.  I'm aware of it being used in XBMC and was never a fan of it there either.

You seem to think it is an issue with finding them and it isn't...I don't even have to sort at all I can just select to filter out everything but that collection....

What we really want is a feature to make for a much tidier display than we have currently that would actually reduce the load time of the Movie Section page due to the fact it wouldn't have to load Icons for every movie in the library that's part of a collection.

I have quite a few Collections in my library and hundreds of Movies, I don't need to see every movie in them displayed on the first level when an Icon that says collection will do and only display what is in it when I drill down into that collection.

As it stands the attempt to display an Icon for every single movie makes the interface messy and sluggish until done loading.

I could easily reduce the number of Icons needed to be displayed if Plex would show one Icon for each collection as opposed to the 5-8 that are part of that collection.

And what would you do in the case of a movie belonging to multiple collections?  Many movies should legitimately belong to multiple collections.  The collections view works quite well for that.  XBMC has no collections view and therefore cannot solve the problem in any way but a fairly odd solution grouping movies in the skin itself.

I have not seen a reason not to use the collections view for this instead of the regular one.

First off I don't have any movies that belong to two different collections and TMDB doesn't support that in their database either. So what your saying is hardly the norm where Collections are concerned.

And it really is not all that difficult to deal with display even if one Movie did get defined as being in two separate collections since all that is required is displaying an Icon on the drilled down Collection page of both collections.

If the DB supports assigning to multiple collections already then display is the easy part as the hardest part is done.

All it has to do is Query the DB for the movies in that collection and add them and their Icons to the Collection display page...

Since that movie would not show up until a collection is selected there is no conflict here at all!

You would never be displaying two collections on the same page using the method we suggest.

But you've still not explained why the current collections view is inadequate.

TMDB support is largely for series.  It can only be part of one series in TMDB.  Collections is a far wider definition than just series.  You can have collections for all kinds of groupings far beyond what TMDB supports:  AFI 100, Disney Animated Features, Disney Features, Academy Best Pictures, etc.  A film can show up in any number of them.

It is important to remember that TMDB is just one way to get collection data and not the driver of it.

Because it requires user intervention to clean up initial display, Only works via Filtering and doesn't allow you to show NON COLLECTION movies at the same time.

This is about reducing the number of movies that display by default. Not about finding movies that are parts of collections.

As it stands currently it is kind of like throwing all your movies on the floor, Painting those movies with UV light and then putting on UV glasses to find the movies that are part of a collection.

When I go to movie section I should not have to display all the Indiana Jones movies I should only have one Icon that lets me see what is in that collection.

So when I go back I don't have to UNDO filters to see the rest of the collection

Without this the display system makes a mess of your library display. I do not need to see an ICON for every movie by default. But I do want to see an icon for each collection and each movie that is an Orphan on the initial display.

As for what you are suggesting regarding TAGS well we can use the search function for that, We don't need to create collections just to make custom tags we can search for.

KInd of re-inventing the Wheel if you ask me...Like creating a Genre Collection when I can just put the genre in the search function and get that.

99.9% of the time I have no intentions of watching a movie that s in a collection.

But I still have to wait until it loads the data for all of the movies in it, Displays it on the screen before I can look for one I DO want to watch.

And just as many people do not share the same preference.

Perhaps you should look at which client you are using if it is that much trouble.

I would love to have the possibility to show my collection in the "All movie sections". For people who don´t have collections it should just show all movies. People with collections should be able to group the items. Similar to XBMC Box viewing. The collections info could be loaded from themoviedb.org for default.

Did you look at the Poll Results? Apparently not!

A collection filter would be a welcome addition!
