1.15.0.647 - windows - no hardware decode nvidia

It not only has to have a decoder it also has to support the codec.

@kd6icz mine encodes without any monitor or dummy nonsense, because I am not using directx, I am using true nvdec/nvenc on linux, not windows fakery…

encoding is not the problem, its the decoding.

DEcoding doesn’t work without a dummy plug even on linux;

  1. because plex has not publicly enabled NVDEC support
  2. even if you use the script/hack to enable linux nvdec, you still need a dummy plug

Unless you are doing something that noone else has figured out ?

If you have both NVDEC and NVENC working on linux, headless without any monitor or dummy plug, there are a lot of folks would like to know how you did it.

I meant decode… it does work, no dongle or monitor, and the nvidia is my second GPU. The onboard has no monitor either…

Strange, seems lots of folks have problems without monitors/dongles.

This isn’t the thread really, but it would be nice to know what your hardware is and how its setup.

No monitor, no dongle, Optiplex 7030, i7 4790, P400, 8GB RAM, 500GB spinner. It works. Multi GPU turned on in BIOS.

you have XORG running, which typically is not used in headless environment.

perhaps that is a key factor for headless linux without a dongle.

XRDP for remote access with gnome desktop. Headless, but not GUI-less.

yeah on windows you can’t normally get 3d/accelerated graphics on RDP without a monitor or dummy plug.

I finally had a moment to shut down my server and plug in the display port dongle. As soon as Windows loaded the nVidia driver I got the good ol’ BSOD. Unplugging the dongle and rebooting hasn’t fixed it. Neither has going back to a good known working build.

I’m going to remove the Quadro and see if that will allow it to boot. If not then I guess I’m reinstalling Windows.

I just hope the dongle didn’t damage the Quadro…

Any updates on this subject? Sure would be nice to use the real NVDEC!

Any updates here without using a Dongle?!

My two month old Quadro RTX 4000 decided today it doesn’t want to encode anymore…

Tried rebooting but nothing. If you try to play something that requires transcoding it just sits there waiting and waiting. Disabled hardware transcoding and everything works fine.

Any ideas on troubleshooting this or do I open an RMA with nVidia?

Is this running headless or do you have a dongle or always connected monitor?

Headless. That’s why it’s only been doing encode. No decode.

Any reason not to get a dongle?

I tried a dongle and very bad things happened. Because I have a server motherboard with an Aspeed 2400 BMC, when I plugged the dongle in it caused a BSOD. The two GPU’s cannot both be enabled and I depend on my BMC.

NVDEC/NVENC do not need the GPU to function. This is why this entire thread exists.

Is there anyone that can help out with decoding on windows? I’ve put a dummy dongle in my P400 and i’m still not getting HW Decoding on it. What can be checked?

With the new server update today, my hardware encoding started working again… Strange.

Encoding has never been a problem…this thread is for decoding
