No Nvidia P400 decode acceleration with 1.17.0.1709

With the recent transcoder update in 1709, PMS is no longer using acceleration for decoding. Encoding still mostly works. I’ve tested this with HEVC, AVC, and MPEG2.

Prior to the new update, the transcoder was working fine for both encode and decode. I can’t guarantee it’s the new update, but it was the only change. I tried to fix it with a display driver update, but it had no effect. I haven’t reverted yet to to do further testing.

I tossed in a sample of my logs here, I could PM them privately if needed.

Is this problem specific to me, or if this is a known problem with the current release?

[I had to remove some repeated sections of “testing API” for nvenc and nvdec. I hit the character limit. The basics are there, sorry.]

Recent topics similar to yours consistently ask the user to get the newly released NVIDIA driver. Users reported success with the one supplied though Windows Update and not the one that you get from NVIDIA’s website.

I’m nearly sure my drivers were newer than that, but I’ll run some more tests later this afternoon. I honestly missed that note, so thanks.

Ok, I think I’m set now. This seems to have been the resolution to this for me:

  1. I updated the OS to the latest version of Windows and removed all existing Nvidia drivers.
  2. On Windows 10 1903 with the basic driver, it still didn’t work. (Windows Update didn’t offer any newer driver)
  3. I updated the driver to the latest WHQL from Nvidia (clean installation) and it started working. Woo hoo.

I had installed that same driver under the prior Windows version, and it didn’t work. No idea why it worked the second time, but here we are.

In a related note, I realized that Tautulli was not properly reflecting the hardware acceleration status, which also threw me for a loop during testing. I wrote that up separately. Thanks for everyone’s help!

What about those of us with older video cards? When I try to playback live tv with Hardware acceleration on, PMS crashes.

The nVidia site says the latest drivers for my card (GTX 460) are v391.35 . I have tried installing a new driver, but the installer says it’s not applicable to my system.

I tried removing all drivers and going with what Windows supplied but that numbering convention is completely different. 23.21.13.9135 Yes it is still an old driver and I have tried several times to but Windws Updates says it’s the latest. image

Your help is appreciated. Right I’m resorting to disabling hardware acceleration.

gtx460 is too old and doesn’t support any hw transcoding.
