2 questions on Server Privacy after the update

Hello - first time on the forum so apologies if this has been gone over.

Like many of you I am moving to secure my privacy from the latest invasive changes from Plex. I followed the helpful guide that was posted and changed my watch history from Friends to Private. However I have two questions:

  1. I see people also saying to Disable Sending playback data to Plex. I’m not sure what the reason for this would be though, wouldn’t that just stop your server from remembering where you were in your last movie/show? Does it do something extra past making your history private?

  2. Even though I have turned off Week In Review emails, and may turn off disabling playback data to Plex depending on what the community has to say about that - wouldn’t any of my users/friends also have to turn THEIR email preferences for week in review off as well to avoid getting information about each other? It seems like I might be able to control my own security, but I would like to pro-actively shut that down for everyone and I haven’t seen that aspect mentioned as much.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Unless you have access to multiple servers and want to keep the watch status in sync across both (assuming they have the same items) or want to back up the watch status for your current server in case of catastrophic failure then leave ‘sync watch state and ratings’ as inactive (which is it’s default state). Leave (or switch back if they were changed) your ‘privacy’ settings set to private.

That’s all that needs doing. Tell users your users/friends to do the same if they don’t want to share with others.

Gotcha - that makes sense, thanks for this. On the subject of weekly emails - I would need to instruct each user/friend to toggle their watch history to private? Presumably the “week in review” checkbox under the email communication settings would still be toggled on, not sure what that email would do if watch history is set to private…do I have any controls as the server owner to either stop that communication to the users, or force history to be private?

I realize thats a long shot - but I am sharing to some less tech-savvy users, many of which dont even utilize plex through a web browser to begin with.

Nothing. I suspect it doesn’t even get sent if there’s no data to be included in it.

No, it’s all done at the account user level, but I believe most of the popular client apps have the required settings available.

It should be noted that unless your ‘friends’ are also ‘friends’ with each other then their watch history etc. wouldn’t be shared with each other anyway. They’d have to change their settings to ‘friends of friends’ for that to happen (and I’m not sure the email is anything other than to ‘friends’). Also, if they’re only using Plex to watch things off your server then they’d have to activate ‘sync watch status’ for there even to be any activity to share.
