2018 --- Which NAS for a first time Plex and local Back up

Hi All

First off I apologise if this is the wrong place but I’ve not used the forums before.

I would like some saga advice on which NAS to buy. I’ve definitely decided buy rather than build, interesting as that would be as I don’t have the time. Size wise I’m pretty settled on a 4 Bay so I have a bit of room to grow. I have a decent music collection and I am looking to digitise all my DVD films and TV series and possibly the Blu-rays as well. There are currently only 2 of us the house and most in my family have their own plex type things so I can’t imagine its going to be any more than 1 or 2 streams from the server, though one will likely be me while I am travelling to work.

I don’t have any 4k content or yet a 4K TV (not going to change this year at least) but I am thinking that I would want it to be capable of direct 4K playback as in the next few years with a new family I expect that there will be some home videos taken and phones will do 4k recording. I’m trying not to have to change things within 18 months once I’ve made my choice

So my options… After exhaustive reading on forums and reviews I’m still a bit unsure. The NAS I am looking at right now are

QNAP 451+
QNAP 453
Synology 918+
WD PR4100

These are not exclusive choices I am also open to suggestions around the same sort of budget

Budget is an issue at the moment so while I would love to get something with an i7 cpu etc its just not happening.

If Chuck happens to see this you made some comments about managing your media when discussing transcoding so that you wouldn’t need to transcode on the fly. Can you explain that?

Go for TS-451+, i have it and is great for MKV 1080p- 4K x264 and x265 (on directplay). Just make sure that your plex client is compatible with your media codecs, for example my LG smart tv [UJ6560]. With “XPLAY” .
i cant watch everthing in directplay and my cpu is on 2-7% .

pd: sorry, my english is bad.
