3.4.0 killed Android auto

Server Version#:
Player Version#: 3.4.0

Hey all, if this is in the wrong spot please move it to where it belongs.

Anyhow plexamp 3.4.0 seems to have broken Android auto functionality near entirely. I can navigate the menus, but attempting to play a track or a playlist results in a black screen with usually no playback.

Occasionally I will get some playback aurally but no metadata or album cover. Alsi, I drive a Ford fusion with sync 3 so i have a drivers instrument cluster display that shows the metadata as well. Now in plex amp it freezes on what WAS playing before I launched into plexamp.

Most of these symptoms happen whether or not it’s local or online media. If the media is online nothing happens at all and it never connected to my Plex server.

Help!

hmm, i haven’t heard of any other reports of issues in Android Auto with the latest version

anyone else having issues?

sharing your debug logs might be helpful as well.

I can’t get Google Assistant to play music from Plexamp anymore. It always tries to play from Youtube Music. I do not have YT Music as default player. This feels like Google is trying to force me into YT Music, but wanted to check if it is something on the Plexamp side. In the past, if Plexamp was the active music player in Android Auto, any voice command to play music would go to Plexamp. Now it seems that no matter which music player is active, all music commands go to YT Music, even if I ask Google to play in a different music player.

Android auto functionality isn’t working for me anymore either. Even after closing auto, plexamp won’t work, won’t load albums etc. Need to reset phone

Edit: even after resetting I can’t get anything out of plexamp. Even after deleting app data I can’t login anymore

this is going down a dark rabbit hole.

read this Plexamp Network Connectivity Tips | Plex Support

and post a log.

Investigating this further - it seems I lose connectivity when on mobile internet, but on wifi (even not on my LAN) I can connect OK. I generated a log after being unable to load my music on mobile internet.409103725416.zip (73.9 KB)

Interestingly, after the very next server update and app update things started working again. I’m totally at a loss as to why, but definately happy with the results.

It looks like it’s having issues reaching your server with the listed URLs, some sort of network issue is likely (either on the client side, not being able to resolve those, or on the server, being inaccessible).

Thanks for having a look. This morning I tried connecting to Plexamp over mobile internet (no luck), then through the full Plex app on the same device and connection. I had no problem navigating my music library and playing something. So it does seem to be specific to Plexamp, at least with my setup. I generated a log from each app: 25217769220587.zip (130.9 KB) plex-log-dave84robertson.zip (133.7 KB)

are you running any custom DNS sort of thing?

the next version of the app (due to head into review in the next week or so) does much more “native” networking and doesn’t have the same limitations, so i expect it’ll resolve whatever’s blocking the current app.

Not that I’m aware of. I did have to opt out of “CGNAT” through my ISP to get Plex accessible remotely in the first place. Not sure if that’s related, networking jargon is not my thing…

Looking forward to the next version

Aaaaaaaaaaah, figured it out… Somehow, the option “disable data usage” got switched on in app info. No idea how or why, but it survived multiple “clear all data” and uninstall → reinstalls.

After turning that off it seems to be working fine on mobile data, also fine through Android Auto. I initially blamed Auto because the car is more or less the only place I have no wifi connection.

Sorry to waste your time, hopefully this helps someone else in the future!

doh! sometimes the most obvious answer…

I observe the same issue as the thread opener: On a fresh install of Plex Server and Plexamp, I get a black screen on AA. Note, cellular data usage is enabled, and as soon as I pull the USB cable, music starts to play via Bluetooth on the car’s speakers.

Please see here: Trouble with Android Auto - Plex Players - Plex Forum.

How can I support the resolving of the issue? Thanks for help!
