I just started using a Roku to watch TV Shows from PMS. I cannot seem to find the 30 second skip like the other clients have. It seems to want to scroll forward then I can stop it and it takes a while catching up to the spot with a rotating percentage indicator. 5~10 seconds, then to find out I didn’t go far enough and I have to do it again and wait for it to catch up again, and again… Am I doing something wrong as its kind of unusable this way. Seriously contemplating returning them.
I think this is just how the Roku player works. You need to have Plex generate “preview thumbnails” and then you will see these over the timeline when you skip forward. This should give you a sense of where you are.
OK thanks! I bought 4 of them. That’s a non starter for us, been using a 30 second skip since ReplayTV back in 1999 and will never go back. The wife acceptance factor (WAF) is in the loo, and I am going to mark this experiment as “failed”. Putting them back in the box and returning them. Really sucks! that issue and the need to control the volume from a different remote put them in the NRPT category.
There is no need to press “up” at all. Simply press “right” and you will be presented with the string of thumbnails which allows you to move to whatever position you want.
@BigBillSD: The Roku remote is mostly only functional with the Roku however there are many many universal remotes that work with Rokus and virtually every home theater component. I use a Harmony with a hub and everything just works.
I use my Roku for 99% of my streaming and I almost never use my Fire 4K or my Shield or any of the other devices I have. Roku is just, by far, the easiest and most reliable device I own.
I’ve only used the Roku remote to control volume for years - the original TV remote goes in a drawer (unless I need to mess with TV menu settings). As long as HDMI is connected most of the remotes will control the audio volume - even the IR ones - so you might have to fiddle with the TV settings to allow the control.
I also suggest generating thumbnails and using the left/right d-pad controls to move forward and back in sections. I used to use ReplayTV back in the before times but I much prefer the thumbnail scan and quick stepping through the scene. I can appreciate the WAF aspect but I think once she uses it a couple times she’ll find it’s more useful - she’s learning a new remote already right?
Interesting, my Roku remote doesn’t have volume buttons and when I check the Roku websites comparison chart, my Roku doesn’t support changing volume. That’s something that should be written in the description, not hidden in a comparison chart on their website. NRfPT is an understatement indeed. -Bill
PS. No i wouldn’t consider buying another remote so I could make it do something it should do in the first place.
Ah. Gotcha. I always got the models that had the nicer remote with the volume controls on them specifically so I wouldn’t have to fiddle with two remotes as often.
Here you can see the different remotes and the ones that’ll control volume have a rocker button on the side: Roku - the “Enhanced Voice Remote” is my preferred remote for radio instead of infrared controls.
I did have one setup where the volume buttons on the remote didn’t work on an older TV and I used this device for awhile: https://www.sideclickremotes.com … adds a set of buttons that you can assign to functions like a mini-universal IR remote. It worked pretty well actually.
I’m not a Roku salesman or anything so obviously use what works best for you; just trying to help avoid a trip back to the store.
Just going to put them back in the box and send them back to Roku. Who would sell a TV remote without a volume control? That would have been a question I would never have thought to ask prior to now.
Roku Ultra - the only Roku to own these days - has a Volume Control on the remote - and you can even turn TV Power off. So far, I have 3 refurbs ($67) and my old friends have at least 6, and have bought 3 more (Xmas - weee) for their kids so they can join in.
Roku Sticks suck in exactly the same way every other stick sucks - but I do have a FireTV 4K stick plugged into a 3’ HDMI Extension cable - because you can’t hate a Plex App Properly - if you don’t have something to see it on - and there’s always hope that one day Plex willl release one that actually works.
Nothing yet, but I can look now and then… and dream.
