4 more drives or 2 drives and a 6-bay

Hi all,

I currently have a QNAP TS-453Bmini with x4 WD Red 4TB drives (RAID 5)

It’s almost full and I guess I have 2 options (without losing media):

  1. get 4 more drives, say 8 TB (more expensive than both the NAS and the 4TB cost me 2 years ago)
  2. get a 6-bay QNAP and 2 more 4TB drives
  3. something else

This is my 2nd QNAP and I like them - I have no experience of anything else (other than using my Mac as a server). Could anyone recommend what might be a good path for me?

My usage is as follows:

  • The QNAP is almost exclusively for Plex
  • I have no 4K requirements
  • I convert all my media to mp4 to avoid transcoding where possible
  • I have 3 remote users (mainly using Apple TVs)
  • I normally only have 1 local user (yup, that’s me)
  • I stream locally over WIFI.
  • Speeds: Speedtest.net shows my Mac’s internet connection is 18Mbps up using wifi - my QNAP is wired but not sure how to test its internet upload speed. Speedtest.net shows my Apple TV typically downloading from the internet at 40-60Mbps if that helps.

Hi,

Have you explored this alternative? https://www.qnap.com/en/compatibility-expansion

Maybe it could fit your requirements.

thanks! …I’ll check it out.
