Which NAS device

Hi All
I am looking at a QNAP ts 251+ for home yo store movies music photos. Also work form home and was thinking about maybe getting a 4 bay one instead. My office at home is in the garden with various computers and printers connected to a hub. Would it be slow backing up back to the house and would I be better off keeping them separate and buying 2 x 2bay NAS
Cheers
Dan

I have a QNAP TS431P and regularly move large files around across several switches in my network at home. I usually get transfer speeds in excess of 100MB/sec. My home network has a switch at one end of the house fanning out to multiple devices, a single Cat5e link to another switch at the other end feeding another group of devices.

My Plex server and NAS are located away from each other and communicate through these 2 switches across that single Cat5e link. This has never been an issue

As long as everything is wired network and not wireless you will barely notice any speed difference, especially if all devices are rated to 1Gb/sec as mine are. (Note: here in Australia a simple consumer grade 8 port un-managed switch can be had for under $50 AUD)

A 4 Bay NAS gives you so many more RAID options over a pair of 2 bays.

Great thank you for your help.
You mentioned a Plex server. I thought I just needed to buy a QNAP ts-251 and subscribe to Plex and that there would be no need for a server too.
