4K, 10-Bit, HEVC, HDR, DTS/x/Dolby HD/Atmos Hardware

I’ve been very happy for the last several years of using an own built HTPC with Windows 7 and plex desktop client/openHT. 1080p, HD bitstream.

But now we’re all moving to 4K, HDR, and HD audio bitstreaming. What’s the best player out there now for this? Does the nvidia shield achieve this or do I need to go back to building a new Kaby Lake HTPC?

Can the above be achieved embedded/Kodi or do I still need to run Windows (10?)

Does plex in its current form even support this new generation of content?

The android app seems to be pretty well loved so my recommendation is use the built in Plex app on your favorite 4k TV.

It ties neatly into the android tv interface; so, for example, you see ‘currently playing’ and ‘new movies’ etc from Plex on the main UI.

I just replaced both my Samsung’s for Sonys (replacing Plex app on Android fire tvs) and I love it.

Thanks, I have an LG OLED E6 TV to last me many years, so it needs to be something from an add-on box or the built in smart features that I doubt very much will work, xplay maybe?

Think NVidia shield is your only option for 4k and HDR. Performance etc is meant to be good. I’ve not tried it though.

I’m looking to build a PC that can 4K ‘transcode’ with HDR as well. It’s hard to tell how much CPU/GPU power is required but I’m guessing someone on here knows.I haven’t tried the shield since I’m guessing it doesn’t have enough horsepower and it’s getting dated at this point.
