Patrick!!! welcome to Plex. One of the best things to read is this Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k - a FAQ
It will bring you up to speed on the concepts, like Direct Play, and hopefully some of the limitations of current hardware. The next article has a lot of gory details about the mpv
program engine that outputs the video for Plex.
So given that your goal is to direct play HDR from client to TV, you’ll likely need a Shield or an AppleTV 4K in the chain, because they are designed to output HDR to a TV, thereby eliminating the need to fiddle with mpv
and Plex Media Player
.
A NAS plus an Intel NUC plus ATV4K is a strong option. You’ll want a UPS if you use a NAS.
Although it is recommended to use a shield or an ATV4K, I get by just fine using the Android app on my Sony TV, and the FireStick 4K’s in the rest of the house… I am sure the Plex app on Samsung is also capable, the issue anyone would run into is TrueHD and Atmos and such… Which are not really difficult to overcome… IF someone runs into issues, it’s no big deal to flip over to the AC3 track which will play without transcoding on most clients…
To my pleasant surprise, my Roku Ultra (current gen) plays 4K HDR flawlessly to my LG. Of course I lose any Dolby Atmos, but a transcode to 5.1 is fine in my scenario.
i was thinking to setup a new computer like,
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
ASUS PRIME X370-PRO
16gb of ram
etc.
