4K buffering with direct play over LAN

Hi,

Complete newb who’s no doubt only scratching the surface of what Plex can do. I’ve just got into 4K mkv and can’t for the life of me figure out why I’m getting buffering every few seconds on certain files.

Server is running on a i5-6600k

Player is running on a i5-7400

Connection is wired and showing as gigabit. No transcoding happening at server end.

Examples:

Dark Knight 18752kbps plays fine

Jurassic Park 33680kbps buffering

T2 49550kbps buffering

Gladiator 20963kbps buffering

The bitrates would lead me to believe its a network issue, yet the player end shows a gigabit connection. Server and player all up to date.

Any advice is massively appreciated.

I’m having a similar problem, I’m at my wits end, it’s only started in the last few days and I’m racking my brain to work out what’s changed.

My setup is HPE server (32gb RAM, Xeon E-2124 CPU - media is on SSD with some VMs (Although still buffers even with all the VMs shut down).

Monitoring in Tautulli and UniFi controller and nothing seems to be throttling, we’re talking about maybe a 30-70Mbps stream, tried wired and wireless to Apple TV and LG Smart TV and in both cases everything is direct playing.

i’ve glanced at the server logs but nothing is jumping out as the reason on the server side.

Anyone had any similar experiences or able to have a closer look at the logs?
I’ve included Apple TV logs and PMS logs.
com.plexapp.plex 2019-12-06–10-40-40-465.log (219.5 KB)
Plex Media Server.log (2.9 MB)

Would it be ludicrous to suggest that a small bug in either PMS or Plex ATV client is causing buffering over ‘secure connections’? I think I noticed a PMS update in the last couple of days?
I’ve been streaming 4K content direct play to the plex app on my LG TV (via insecure connection) for the last hour or so and (touch wood) haven’t had any buffering issues…
