All my bright colours are getting washed out to pure white when playing my 4K content in Plex. (There are no clouds in the sky [sky blue becomes white]). I have turned on Tone Mapping but am not sure what else to try.
VLC does know how to handle such a situation perfectly well and does tone-mapping for non-HDR output, but Plex seemingly doesn’t.
It’s my first 4K UHD piece of content so forward me to any FAQ’s if necessary.
No Plex client as such is HDR-compatible.
Plex server can do tone-mapping during transcoding. Which is only possible on a very powerful CPU.
Plex clients which are running on HDR-compatible hardware can play HDR video as long as no transcoding is necessary. (Example: nVidia Shield Pro, which does tone-mapping itself when necessary).
There is currently no Plex client for desktop computers which is HDR-compatible.
You haven’t addressed his issue and you’re making misleading statements. Plex Media Player should play HDR content without issue via direct play with HDR to SDR tone mapping (not transcoding!). The fact that colours appear washed out means that tone mapping isn’t working correctly. Here’s a video demonstrating it working: PLEX: HDR to SDR Tonemapping, NO TRANSCODING - The BEST way to play 4K UHD BluRay Rips in Plex! - YouTube
I’ve compared a file on the same computer and Plex for Windows is washed out. Plex Media Player and Plex HTPC looks alright, Windows Films & TV player might look better.
I’m not doing anything… but I see what you mean, the contrast is quite dark and the colours are oversaturated. It looks like I need 2x versions of every movie (x1 SDR & x1 HDR)
