Sounds funny, right? Seriously though, I am wondering if there is a way to force my plex server (a PC running windows 10) to tone map HDR content to SDR for my HDR capable displays. Why am I needing this? Because, although 4k HDR content looks fantastic about 40% of the time, there are many times where the 4k HDR versions are simply too dark. I assume this is do to some HDR titles that are mastered to 4000 nits rather than 1000. Either way, my TV, which is an LG OLED from 2017 lacks any tone mapping to assist with this, since it predates the A9 processor that was equipped in the 2018+ sets.
Anyway, is there any way of forcing tone mapping, even for HDR displays? Or am I going to have to find a way, perhaps in the service menu of my TV, to disable sensing of HDR content (which may or may not be possible). Also, I’ll answer the inevitable question of, “why not just get a regular blu ray copy”; the 4k resolution bump is noticeable, and, the tone mapped colors are FAR more vibrant than anything I get in the 1080p native environment. I know I’m not getting the full HDR experience when converting to SDR colorspace, but it’s still a HUGE bump in quality over regular blu ray, if only for the new remastering that comes with 4k HDR titles.
Oh, I’m also a lifetime PLEX PASS subscriber, if that helps
