4k Content Issues - garbled video

Server Version#: 1.18.7.2434
Player Version#: 7.28.0.15501

I have a Shield TV Pro 2019 running the above plex versions. I ripped a copy of Toy Story 4 in 4k format into an MKV container, and am trying to play through Plex. The audio is fine, but the video comes out all garbled and choppy. If I play the file directly through VLC on the Shield TV, it plays fine with HDR. How can I figure out why Plex is choking on this file?

haven’t looked at your logs yet (thanks for attaching them though), but the two main things that cause 4k problems are;

  • HD audio … shield needs to be plugged into a receiver that can handle truehd/atmos/dts-hd-ma, otherwise plex will transcode the audio
  • if you have subtitles enabled, and audio is transcoding, that will force video to transcode, and then you will lose 4k/hdr

if neither the above is true, ensure that you have shield and plex settings set to hdmi pass through

if you have not already read, see @ [INFO] Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k for a lot of 4k related info

Can confirm same issue. was working fine last week. since latest update garbled video on 4k direct play.

Good to know I’m not alone!
