4K HDR HEVC MKV on Apple TV - Do I need Plex Pass?

My brother-in-law is wanting to watch 4K HDR HEVC MKV on his Apple TV 4K.

Does he need Plex Pass to do this? (ie access to the experimental player)

Thanks. After some testing we found a 100mbps bitrate 4K HDR HEVC MKV on Direct Play would buffer on the Plex app, but played without issue with Infuse6

He purchased an Infuse subscription as a result.

No that was the strange thing. Both apps were direct playing video and audio.

Who can address this problem? Any Plex staff?

Working ok with iPad OS

I could get lower bitrate 4K HDR HEVC MKV files to playback on the Plex client, but anything around 50mbps bitrate (streaming brain estimated 96mbps) buffered on the Plex client- but played fine on Infuse.

This is on an Apple TV 4K, on Cat6 Ethernet. Direct playing on both clients.

I noticed this exact behavior today amidst a sampling of my 4K files. The 2 that would have an occasional buffer like stutter for upwards of a second were files where the video bitrate channel was >80Mbps. There wasn’t a buffer message within the client itself, it would just pause and then pick up the pace again.

This is on an Apple TV 4K with the latest public release of the PLEX client with both streams as Direct Play.

I’m considering the Infuse client route as well for a short term solution.
