oh i guess i didn’t lie and wasn’t blind! i could have sworn i didn’t see messages but when i came back and click your name for the third time i saw it and thought i must have just missed it before.
i have no scheduled tasks in dsm that should be shutting the server down. and it only shuts down when i add that vaap line in and it didn’t do this behavior in dsm 6.
no web hooks.
i do have some friend i allow access to my server.
i think the issue may be that plex isn’t even writing logs after i do the vaap change and so all we are seeing is me shutting the server down to do the vaap change and then no new logs until i remove that from the preferences.xml and restart plex.
so when i said it was running but only for a few seconds, apparently just the dsm listed that but in fact it fails to run or at least fails to write any logs when trying to run.
probably means i am doing something wrong in the preferences.xml which i just sent you via pm as well.
see my note above. i think the shutdown we are seeing is just me shutting it down through dsm. and then we don’t see new logs show written when it is trying to boot up after my xml change.
question. i do not think i added vaap twice to the preferences file. Is it possible that the new plex comes with that setting already? or is the only way that i manually added it. because this is a week old install so i really don’t think i manually added it. especially since it is in the middle of the code and not at the end. adding it to the end is the only procedure that i have followed. hmmm. but maybe when it migrated it retained that setting since i had it in my old preferences file and just relocated it.
so i believe you are saying that i can remove it at the end and it is already using the i965 driver as it is located elsewhere in my preferences. Can i remove it from both places without it screwing anything up? Because i want to test with and without it now to see how this 4k movie plays under both scenarios.
lmk if i should start a new thread or just take this to messages or what but now i am trying to figure out what changed between my old set up and my current set up that would cause this same movie to not be able to play now. I know it is transcoding truhd to eac3.
but when i was on dsm 6 and updated to this i965 driver my cpu stayed at sub 5% utilization and i could actually play this movie.
currently with and without the i965 fix, this movie struggles to play at all. and currently isn’t playing at all but sometimes it does for a few seconds. its hammering my cpu. and i dont think my settings have changed (at least none that i think should effect this, but clearly thats probably incorrect). I have a shield running to a sonos bar that doesn’t support Truehd. the shield is set for passthrough hdmi. but i dont see a change in behavior from turning that off and on (i didn’t restart the shield in between setting changes though).
i have HW acceleration on for the ds920 which it is transacoding the video with HW but not the audio (not even sure if it can). Thoughts?

ya thats what i am trying to figure out what changed. i was having issues before with playing that video but once i added the vaap change and moved the hdmi passthrough it was able to play it fine. now it is having a struggle bus.
shouldn’t be having bandwidth issues though. but i can try restarting my network and seeing if that fixes anything. i just changed the “internet speed” in plex settings to unlimited as it is connecting via local network but they are on different subnets so maybe plex thinks it is going to the internet and throttling it itself. hmm. ill keep fiddling around with settings and see if i ever make it work.
i know it was working before so i can do something to make it work again ha! just may take days to figure out what that is. if all fails. reboot 3 times…
plex shows a direct connection when i play from the shield so i dont think it is using relay. but i’ll look into it. can’t move them to the same subnet at the moment.
nas is static. but the shield is not on static. but everything plays fine currently its just struggling with that movie. all normal 1080p non-truehd plays fine. PMS has an update on shield so maybe that’ll help. i cant even get it to attempt to play anymore. i dont have that much media thats in that format though.
so even though plex has to transcode the audio it is going to force transcode the video as well? just confusing why before when i played this file the CPU usage was much lower almost like HW transcoding was working for both audio and video but now its just doing it with video. I’m assuming it can hw transcode the audio too but i dont actually know that.
also. why does it need to transcode if the shield can handle it. is it just because the tb it is playing on can’t and shield won’t transcode itself unless it is using its plex server.
just found another post of someone having the same issues. was able to play content on dsm 6 but after upgrading it is struggling with the same content. You posted over there as well. Can move this to that thread if that is where it should be.
gotcha. just weird that two weeks ago the file played fine. and upgrading to dsm 7.0 it no longer plays. same shield, same tv, same settings. but i’ll keep fidling around with it. I am not sure how to diagnose a network issue given i have about 700mbps across network throughput and again, it didn’t have a network issue two weeks ago.
