PLEX (DSM7) the server is not powerful enough to convert the video

Server Version#: 1.24.0.4930-7000
Player Version#: 4.63.0

Hello, since I installed the DSM 7 on my DS218 + I have the problem (plex the server is not powerful enough to convert the video) for both movies and series. Under DSM6 never had a problem. I changed nothing in my synology only the update of DSM 7, I followed all the installation procedures. Everything is working fine except that I get this error which happens from time to time. If I want to watch the movie or an episode directly from the PLEX home screen, when the server error occurs I have to go to the movies or series directory, go to the series, select the series, season and the "Episode sometimes it works. Where does this server error not fast enough …? Under the DSM6 never had this error.

I use plex in amazon firestick 4k ans PS5 PLEX on bell fibe 1gig
Thanks in advance. Christian

Ps Sorry for my English, this is not my first language

Need the log files ZIP please which captures a transcoding attempt.

  2. Wait 20 seconds
  3. Stop
  4. Download Logs

Thank you Trumpy81, i will check that.
Ok for debug verbose off, if next time

Hi. Did you ever get a solution for this? I just upgraded my DS416J to DSM7 and I am getting the same error message. “The server is not powerful enough to convert video.”

@dubufox

Would you please do the following?

  1. Make certain DEBUG logging is enabled and VERBOSE disabled (Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced). SAVE if you make changes.

  2. Now recreate the playback failure

  3. Wait 20 seconds after the failure

  4. Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs

  5. Attach the ZIP file it gives you here for me to review.

Hi all,

I’m also experiencing this issue, have been for a few months I think, unsure of exactly when it started. Could have been at the DSM7 upgrade.

I have a Firestick 4K from 2018, Synology DS920+, DSM 7.0.1-42218. NAS is around 1 year old with 64TB of storage. Plex server is on 1.24.5.5173.

Some stuff plays perfectly first time, other stuff seems to fail 90% of the time, however if you keep trying it eventually decides to play it. When it does, it uses Direct Play. Happens to both x264 and x265.

I have reset the app and uninstalled/reinstalled. Seems to fix it briefly however goes back to this state before long.

I have attached logs with verbose debugging enabled, attempted to play a file which errored, waited 20 seconds then downloaded.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Zip log file

Thanks again.

I can’t be much help with the player but it’s definitely the player. First packets of data start and then the player disconnects. Is it wireless and the WiFi strength might be too low / too slow ?

In my case it’s wired into the same router that the NAS goes into.

If it was the player I would expect all files to fail, however many of them play perfectly every time. If Iron Man fails, I can go and reliably play another similar or larger file straight after.

I can even alternate between them; Iron Man will fail every time, the other will play every time.

So what’s the difference between the two files?

May I see the XML (from <media> through </media> ?

That will tell us all we need to know about the video, audio, and embedded subtitles (which are often the problem on a Synology)

Also be advised, I do not see a PlexPass on this forum account. If you have a PlexPass acount, HW transcoding will greatly reduce the video transcoding load.

A Synology cannot transcode video above 720p without it

Iron Man (Doesn’t work)

Star Trek Beyond (Does Work)

More interestingly, I have discovered that Iron Man will play IF I can resume it. So I loaded Plex Web on my laptop, started playing it, skipped ahead, and then closed. I then went to the Firestick 4K, selected it from the Home sceren, selected Resume, and it played perfectly.

If I select ‘Play From Start’, it fails again with “The server is not powerful enough to convert video”. Selecting Resume again plays immediately without issue.

I have attached log files again showing it resuming without error, and then failing when played from the start.

Log ZIP

Would it be possible to get a log where :

  1. VERBOSE logging is turned OFF (it’s off by default because we don’t use it)

  2. Only one person is streaming.

Hi there,

As requested, I tried to Play From Start (failed), Resumed (worked), Play From Start (Failed), Resumed (worked), no other streams or users on at the same time.

Downloaded this log 20 seconds later.

Are you pressing STOP or are you exiting the app -OR- is that the app failing?

I didn’t exit the app at any point. I tried to play with “Play From Start”, it errored with the transcoding message and returned to the Home screen.

Then played with “Resume”, it successfully resumed for 10-15 seconds of playback, I then pressed Back on my Firestick 4K remote to return to the Home screen.

Repeated twice.

Just to be 100% certain of what buttons I pressed, I repeated the process again…

So this time it went: Play From Start (failed), Resume (worked), Play From Start (failed), Resume (worked), all between 17:56-17:57

Each time it worked, I ended playback by simply pressing Back on the Firestick remote to return to Home. If it errored, I just hit OK on the error message and it returned to Home.

I went into the film from the Continue Watching section on Home each time. App did not close or crash at any point.

Yuck.

So it’s that damn Firestick being dumb.
I don’t own one / have access to one so can’t even help you get around the issue.

You’re 100% certain it’s getting more than 100 Mbps wifi / network speed ?

The Firestick is connected via a 1Gbps UGREEN USB adapter and then via Ethernet. It can comfortably stream 50mbps 4K files. No WiFi at any point.

Interestingly my other Firestick, non-4K, does not have this issue. Connecting via the same method. The OP also has a 4K firestick, so that might be a factor.

That does make it a Firestick app issue.

May I ask you to recreate the problem, using both 1080p and 2160p content - then capture and attach both PMS logs ZIP AND the player logs (for the app team)
