4K, optimized versions, and handbrake

Server Version#: 4.34.4

Hello,
I am curious if anybody can point me in the right direction when it comes to understanding how plex responds to optimized versions differently than when you run files through handbrake.

I am getting to the point where I have a few 4K files and have been looking into how to manage them. I see people suggesting using a non shared folder so plex doesnt try to transcode the 4k files, but this leads to duplicates in your library. It seems that if plex is the one creating optimized versions, it tends to understand that the file is not a duplicate but just a different resolution of the same file, with the catch of washed out colors.
I would like to try and run the files through handbrake to maintain image quality, but have plex understand that it is a single movie in different resolutions as if plex itself did the optimized version. Is there a way to do this?

You can do the same thing. Just name the file slightly different (add some text inside brackets [ ] so they are ignored but will match to the same movie. Then you can choose these the same way using “play version”.
