4K UHD on Xbox One X

I spent a few hours last weekend trying to research this here and elsewhere but no specific answers just naturally very variable ones as it seems and thngs changed over time so with release of XB1X thought I would ask

The following basic questions assume you have no network bandwidth issues

  1. What format(s) must a UHD movie be ripped to in order for it to be played back successfully on an Xbox One X in 4K HDR?

  2. xxxxxxx

  3. Does the media server have the ability to covert existing movies that are not compatible into a format that is?

Well you would have got more replies if you didn’t ask question #2

I’d like the answers to question 1 and 3 myself. I’ve tried countless ways to send the Plex App on my XBOX One S an Atmos track but it is always transcoded.

I live in Australia so it is legal to rip for my own use in my own house

Found answer to #1 in another thread

Resolution: 4096x2160 or smaller
Video Encoding: H.265 (HEVC; both 8-bit and 10-bit) and mpeg4
The content is being Direct Played
No subtitles are enabled

Removed #2 from my original post but would still like answer to #3

The Plex server will transcode all 4K content unless it meets the above criteria. Further more it will not play HDR, so any HDR content will looks terrible as the colours will be washed out.

Added to this, the only audio codec supported is aac and ac3, and because HEVC is not supported by the HLS profile, your video will be transoced to H264 also.

So for the moment the xbox one s with plex is not a viable 4K UHD player.

We have been told that the team are “looking into” adding support for HDR and full audio bitstraming/support, but there is no other commitments apart from that. It could be next week, it could be next year, we just don’t know.

ianegerton, it took me reading through 3 pages of posts to find your post which ties everything together for me. thanks so much. wish we had a fix though :frowning:
