4k/UHD Optimisation

One of my TV’s cant play HEVC and so plex tried to transcode it but the server just cant keep up and it buffers and is unwatchable. It is quite a powerful machine too, an I7 with 8 cores so i thought i’d just optimise it for TV and watch it tomorrow.

I was puzzled to find that plex had “optimised” the 38Mbps 4K video down to 10Mpbs 1080p.

I see that in the custom options I can increase the bit rate to 20Mbps but why does it have to downscale it to 1080p? I want to retain the original resolution.

The problem is not bandwidth it’s that the TV does not have HEVC codec so really all that needs to happen is for the video to re-wrapped in another container.

I have so many of these files now that I cant face manually re-encoding them all. It would take months of loud fans blazing away in the house nonstop

Is there a way to have plex optimisation with 4k files or some other workaround that can be automated?

4k only really works with the HEVC codec. Forcing the h.264 codec to do 4k will only lead to giant files and suffering. (if it works at all)

Is your TV actually a 4k model?
If so, you might be better off with a player device which supports 4k and HEVC, like the nVidia Shield.

Yes my tv is a 4k model. I’ll look for an alternative solution.
