5400/5600rpm vs 7200rpm?

Server Version#: 1.21.4.4079
Player Version#:

I want to add another HDD to house my movie and tv files for Plex. I usually use 7200rpm / 256mb cache drives (4TB for around $75. New, not refurb) but the 4TB one I usually get is currently not in stock. There is a 4TB 5400rpm/256mb cache HDD available immediately for $89.
Would you suggest I stay with 7200rpm, or will a 5600rpm drive be OK and not cause buffering, etc.?
Thanks!

If we are talking hard drives for media storage, 5400 rpm is more than enough.
You can use whatever gives you the best bang for the buck.
(plus 5400 rpm drives usually run cooler, which is good)

But careful when you are planning to use RAID levels 5 or 6: I cannot recommend you to use drives which use the slow “shingled magnetic recording” (SMR) method. You want to make sure that all drives in the RAID use “conventional magnetic recording” (CMR).

The drive which houses your Plex data folder is a different matter. Here, you want a fast drive.
(with a large media collection, you might want an SSD)
