I have a Synology DS218play, and quite often I get the ‘Plex spinning circle’ and the player can’t play my file due to the NAS’s inability to transcode. Which Synology machine could I upgrade to, which is rather more capable, as far as transcoding is concerned? Is this something that might be better answered on the Synology forums?
The DS918+ , if you can find them, or a DS423+ which is new, is a good choice.
You want an Intel 64-bit CPU which the DS423+ has.
Make sure to fill it with 8GB of RAM (2x 4GB matched pair) for max performance.
You’ll be able to move the drives from your existing DS218play and put them in the DS423+ , let it update DSM, and you’ll not have any data loss.
Synology has a HDD migration how-to for this but it really is trivial.

Many thanks, ChuckPa.
Why not the 220+? It has the GeminiLake GPU for transcoding.
