Oh yes @stanleywebb , absolutely! A private network is indeed the best idea, thanks for that:)
An update for this thread:- I have now re-written a fair bit of this guide to make it easier to read and understand. There is also a new Part G) that speaks of Remote Access monitoring. Thanks and enjoy.
I have now again re-wrote certain parts and added more information to each section for a clearer understanding for everyone. Please enjoy.
Great article. Although it’s only half useful for those of us using PMS as a DVR, because PMS won’t wake itself up prior to scheduled recordings (something that Windows Media Center did). The motherboard in my PMS server died so I’m hoping to rebuild it in the next 1-2 weeks (currently have my Shield as a temporary PMS). I look forward to using this guide once I do get it back up…although I should also look into a UPS too.
Thanks man for the interest, it’s much appreciated:) I am very happy if you or someone else have found a way to wake up their PMS server for things like scheduled DVR recordings, or anything else for that matter, and are keen to list their findings here. And ah ok, I suppose these things do happen man. A UPS would indeed be worthwhile for anyone experiencing storms in their area (not that I recommend leaving your PC on when there is a lightning storm) or if the electricity in one’s area is temperamental.
hey all by any chance could this be adapted to the PMS waking itself up for its own recording’s on DVR? if at all possible? currently I do not use your above mentioned I set the server to sleep its self using a task schedule and the an Ewelink plug in to turn it on at specific times, and I am currently looking to get rid of doing away with doing all the leg work if that makes sense, how ever I will say perfect guide by the way
Hey @Chalky1982, how goes it?
Yes great question. I currently do not use DVR recordings myself, as free-to-air TV isn’t the most exciting here, but if anyone knows any workarounds please brainstorm here!
& Ok wow, I haven’t heard of an Ewelink plug. Sounds intriguing, & your very welcome to list the details!
And thanks man:) It’s taken a lot of time to compile and list properly
Hey Yeah its all good thanks you know how it goes sleep, work, plex, repeat lol, How’s you?
ER DVR recordings have been a pain in the rear but that’s another story..
But details on Ewelink, Basically I have the server switching on through the Ewelink plug as you can set it on a schedule, (my other half tweaked the server to accept a power pulse from the ewelink to make the server wake up & also sleep if we need it to) & then a task schedule from with in windows opening a small batt file with the power sleep/hibernate function. (If you would like info on my bat file let me know. ![]()
here is a picture of ewelink bits & their website is Home - eWeLink
If you would like anymore info please by all means message me
Wow fantastic! This is all news to me & sounds so good. I’m so humbled you have found another means to create your own way to wake & sleep your server. Great work man! Keeping this conversation open for anyone else who is curious!
Thanks bud, I must admit though can be total pain in the rear at times flipping from scheduling shutdowns on the computer and then doing the same on phone device app to wake server, but its good for a work round instead of using tons of electric, and yeah no problem with me keeping conversation open as I don’t mind answering any questions people might have…
as we have all been there once or twice. lol
Yess technology hey! Who doesn’t love it
Oh and thx for that man! Should’ve really asked but we need more geniuses on this page
Hmm got that right bud well at times we love it when its working lol
Your more than welcome bud. Deffo 2nd that one, needed more geniuses… lmao

Hey bud, I was going to do a how to guide on ewelinks and scheduling with in windows, reading yours I was hoping I could message you it to have a once over if at all possible… ??
Of course bro:) Msg away
Hi. Remote access to my server was done automatically on port 13504. I already setup wake on lan at my router and pc woke up just fine. But plex apps can’t wake the pc up inside or outside my network. I have a tp link archer c2 and tried to copy your settings with no luck.
Remote access is working with no problems since i enabled it. Also my ip is dynamic. I’m kinda lost since i tried a lot of combinations to make the server wake up with plex apps but none worked.
Hi @leandronb I hope your day is going well,
Firstly can you confirm that you have followed each and every step listed? That you have everything required, including a NIC ethernet adapter? And if not, can you please list which parts you did not complete/are not able to complete? I cannot help you without you listing what you have not finalized within the guides steps.
And can I ask why that port? The port should be defaulted to 32400.
I have a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller. That port was set automatically by plex server, is not set manually. When i tried to do it manually the server was not open outside my network. When i leave on auto, remote connection works fine.
A) I didn’t found any setting related to WOL but it works fine in my network using an iOS app to wake the PC.
B) I already setup wake on lan on my router to wake the pc. Is working fine.
C)Remote connection to plex works fine from any device. I didn’t have to setup my router (TP LINK Archer C2).
D) I already set this up before because windows was waking at middle of the night, never did it again.
E) My adapter have most of these settings, some i couldn’t find.
F) Already disable other stuff that would make windows wake.
G) Didn’t install the app.
H) HDDs fine
I) Do not need it since only one person uses my server outside my network, so not a big deal.
J) I have a surge protector, but also turn off my pc if a storm is really bad.
Hi @leandronb,
I will list a detailed response as to what you may not have covered yet, but I cannot diagnose your entire setup process over this guide’s public comments as I do not have all the free time to pinpoint your exact issue. This guide is self-explanatory and has worked for the majority of people who have followed it properly, meaning they followed every step word by word, including the details within the comments. Thank you then for your understanding

Firstly your Realtek Family Controller may not actually be your actual ethernet adapter, you’ve got to re-look at your options listed in the device manager of Windows and figure out if it’s your main internal ethernet adapter and then configure it’s properties accordingly, as the above guide states. Secondly I don’t believe a Family Controller is actually a NIC Ethernet adapter anyway, to find this out you will need to do your own research…

You mention that you are able to wake your PC from an “iOS app”. That doesn’t tell me much… Which iOS app is able to wake your PC and is it the Plex app/or have you attempted to wake your PC from the Plex iOS app?

You mention that you believe you didn’t have to setup your TP-Link router’s settings- Within the first few comments listed below this guide there are screenshots of router configurations that are needed in order for the waking process to work. This will likely be your culprit. The router needs to be set up properly too.
You will find that the port that you mention that is working for your Plex remote access is actually interlinked with how your router’s settings have been configured, so best to dig into your routers settings and set it up accordingly,
Cheers
Also, a ‘Realtek family controller’ or something different altogether may not be the correct adapter to have. People may have this on-board your motherboard, however a family controller is likely not the same as a NIC ethernet adapter. For anyone that has this listed in their device manager, you can always try this guide with such a family controller or what you may have on-board, but as mentioned I do not believe this particular device is the same as a NIC ethernet adapter, which allows for a true Windows waking process.
Here is a description from Quora.com that speaks of what a Family controller does-
https://www.quora.com/What-is-a-“Realtek-PCIe-FE-Family-Controller”-and-what-are-its-functions
And not to worry, if you don’t have a NIC ethernet adapter installed, there may be an easy fix for this. Below is a link that lists NIC ethernet adapter cards/and dongles available to buy online. Or you could simply head to your local computer shop and by it from them. This may be as easy as spending $20 on such a device.
In Google, simply search for keywords such as ‘Buy NIC ethernet adapter online’, and then find an adapter card or a dongle (meaning a plug and play external USB stick-like device) which looks decent and usable. And remember, you get what you pay for.
Here is Amazon US’s store on internal NIC ethernet adapter cards-

I hope this then helps anyone that may be having issues with their particular internal LAN device configuration.
I mentioned the ios app, but is a generic tool that can wake the pc using mac address and ip. I used another tool from a laptop and it worked too.
Plex apps do not wake the pc, only these tools that need mac address and ip.
The problem about setting up my router is that copying your settings, remote connection do not work. I copied exactly your settings but couldn’t access plex outside my network anymore. The moment i deleted that ip forwarding and virtual nat, and disable manual port on plex, it worked again.
What do you mean by true windows waking process? i can successfully wake windows by lan, but not outside my network. And since i have an itx motherboard, another PCIe card is not possible.
The thing i don’t understand is how a remote plex app will find my router without an ip address. Since my ISP uses dynamic ip, i’m not sure how it is done.
If i manage to understand how a signal will be received by my router and then wake my pc, i will probably figure it out how to make this work. Or maybe a NIC have something more than an onboard ethernet adapter.
I need to understand what did you do on your router to enable remote access, and after that what is done to make the router receive a signal from a plex app.
These are the settings i have on this network adapter.
