I would like to think I could help you with this. But unfortunately, I do not use DD-WRT custom firmware on my router, and therefore are unsure of what may be causing the waking ability to not work with your PC. It would be a matter of trying different things. I also cannot confirm that this custom firmware has the ability to do as the guide explains, because it is out of my realm of knowledge. I am very happy if anyone else has made their Windows PCs waking ability work on their end with DD-WRT firmware, and wants to share their findings here. The only other thing I can suggest is if you try contacting the support team behind this firmware company, and see if they can help you with it. I do hope you can find a solution to it, and if you do please do feel free to share your solution on this thread:)
Hey guys, back again to this time ask the community a question, relating to if anyone has been able to get other ethernet internal adapters, other than NIC ethernet adapters such as the ‘Intel Ethernet Connection’ adapter to work with the above guide process. This includes other adapters such as the Realtek Family Controller that I did speak of in Part E) above, and which mentions-
So if anyone has been able to make the above guide process work with such an adapter other than a NIC ethernet adapter, it would be great to hear from you.
Hi. I have a Realtek Family controller and managed to get WOL working. Thank you for the brilliant guide!
After updating my bios and network drivers, I then made these bios changes:
Disabled EuP 2013 in the Power management setup.
Enabled Resume by PCI-E device in Wake up Event Setup.
Both under Advanced Settings. Certainly not obvious what to change on my MSI board.
Hope this helps.
Anyway to get this to work with magic packet? when I have pattern match selected, my computer can’t stay asleep for more than 3 seconds before it powers back up.
I finally was able to track it down to my Ethernet card. Disabling pattern match and having all other settings enabled I can sleep properly. Obviously this causes a problem as my plex content is not available now. Might need to run it 24/7 if I can’t make it work on magic packet or find out why pattern match doesn’t keeps it awake.
Edit: I should note, I only care about local. I never remote stream. Also i did try to powercfg to see scheduled tasks, but they are all disabled
Along with the advice to disable “Advertise as player” and using this utility I’ve got my server to sleep and wake perfectly. Seems to give you a lot more options to dig into.
I’m opening the conversation/s out to you guys now as I have been really busy and are unable to answer everyone’s questions. Please feel free to reply to each other and help each other like other threads. Thanks guys.
Very thorough in the instructions. Thank you for gathering and compiling all this information. This clearly took a lot of time and effort.
Following these instructions, I’ve gotten really really close to this working perfectly. I can wake the server both in network and remotely. In fact the only issue I am experiencing, is the server won’t sleep for much longer than a minute or two before the LAN wakes it up again.
I’ve spent a ton of time trying different router settings, adapter settings, etc. Still no luck yet, but I’m going to stay at it. I saw some other people in this thread experiencing the same problem. If anyone figured out a solution, I’d love to hear it–I’m running out of ideas.
When I DO find a solution (I’m thinking optimistically here) I’ll be sure to post back in case anyone else finds this thread and has similar issues.
Hi @kvingerhagen ,
Usually, when the PC loads immediately, or intermittently after placing the Windows PC to sleep, it is usually due to a graphics card driver problem, and it in need of an update. Try updating your graphics card drivers, then restarting your PC (and do this each and every time you update or install graphics drivers), then trying to sleep the PC. This may very well solve your issue, and if it does, please let me know.
And to @Matt29Taylor , I apologise for not responding to your question sooner. I have been away from the Plex forums for some time now, and have only recently come across this fix. I hope this above fix also fixes your issue too.
I have no idea what was wrong before, but i reverted back to uncheck “magic packages” after confirming that i already had the latest graphic drivers. However this time it didn’t randomly start again after 15 seconds. All i’ve done in between is testing out WOL with magic packets and then reverting back to allow all packets again.
I’m guessing plex have it built in to stop the computer from sleeping while it’s streaming as well?
If you have correctly adjusted Part D)'s “When sharing media” section to what you believe best suits you, then there shouldn’t be any issues when streaming media, no.
@SunnyDays; just wanted to thank you for your clear and detailed information. I was able to get WOL working perfectly on my system
Dell XPS 8920, Win 10, with Qualcomm Atheros NIC
Created inbound and outbound rules for port 32400 in Windows Firewall as suggested
Asus AC1900 router
Set up port forwarding for ports 32400 and 7, and port triggering for 32400
Everything works as hoped for. My server pc wakes up when accessed by my iphone or Roku box connected to my home network by wifi, and also when accessed remotely by my iphone over cellular connection. And my pc goes back to sleep as expected, in either situation.
Thanks again for the great tutorial instructions!
I ended up installing DD-WRT on my router which allowed me some options to wake my PC with specific scripts when the right ports were triggered. This worked for some time, until I updated Windows and Plex (not sure which caused the functionality to break). After that, the PC kept waking again. But at that point I was already putting together a new server that didn’t require going to sleep, so I no longer needed to tinker with this particular issue. Appreciate all the responses and ideas. Hope they help others working towards that goal.
Hey guys, I just saw both of your above comments. You are both very welcome! I am glad I have been of help to you. Currently I am not using Plex for other reasons, but I am happy to provide feedback when I can regarding the guide. I hope you enjoy your weekend.
