A more user friendly UI

I posted this on the Plex subreddit:

And a lot of people seemed to be thinking the same thing.

Things like changing the video quality / adding subtitles / selecting a genre are so tucked away that I have to keep reminding my friends how it works. Things like choosing a genre, selecting video quality and adding subtitles shouldn’t be this hard and should be visible in plain sight.

Well. I guess for stationary clients, you probably wont change these settings very often, so idk.

For mobile clients, easier access to these settings would probably be beneficial.

A lot of times my friends are watching 1080p movies converted to SD (Plex just defaults to it sometimes) when their network is well enough equiped to easily handle 1080p. Seeing the option right in front of their eyes will (in my opinion) intrigue them enough to check if there are more options. The current little icon with the 3 dials just won’t do that.

Yea I agree with that. Good idea. I would have upvoted it if I had more votes.

Your UI, and clients defaulting to max/original quality.

Fair play.

PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN <3
Also, convert automatically or original quality default. Pain in the ass to have to explain to my family member, every time. And I still see people converting to 720p cause they did not change the option globally.

A more “family and friends friendly” UI would be amazing. Even as the owner and heavy user, I have trouble finding how to change audio/video/add subtitles compared to when I use Netflix or YouTube. There’s too many sub menus is what I think is the biggest nuisance.

I +1 this suggestion as well, the Roku app also defaults to 720p even when it’s streaming from the same network. Being able to easily change that without going into the settings panel would be awesome too.

i don’t know why plex don’t set default settings as original quality…

Its horrible how you have to explain, every family how to change the quality.

I agree with this so much. Plex has so many sub menus for simple tasks that should just be on the player, like quality and subtitles.

100% better!! Quality shouldn’t be buried in multiple menus

This would be amazing. Would also be great if plex remembered that setting as the default, as explaining to someone how to set default quality is painful.

Genre and Network tabs similar to what Emby has would be boss

Yeh I couldn’t agree more, also have direct play/play original set by default would be amazing. It’s to hard for me to explain to every new member I add how to do this on their device.

Seeing as a lot of people think plex needs a UI refresh I made a quick little prototype:

This would be a REALLY REALLY good thing to do!

Really great suggestions. I would add that these need to be consistent in all end device UIs. Family use is typically not in front of the WenUI or even mobile, but on a big screen with either a stick (Roku, Amazon) or just using a Smart TV app.

Simple things like global filtering of only showing unseen episodes seems something that got lost. The old app from the community for old model Samsung smart TVs did (and still does) well, the newer official apps make it more or less impossible to set a global filter for only unseen - an obvious family friendly thing (try explaining to my wife why she can see all the stuff she has already seen).
