Hi all !
I'm a new user of plex web (&iOS) & plex server (Synology NAS), I :wub: Plex and I have a feature request / idea that could make it IMO better
I believe it could be interesting and very convenient to have the ability to choose on-the-fly the quality of the video and audio streams.
- A dropdown / list / switch button could be added to the audio and especially video players, at least on Plex Web first and maybe later on others (mobile, tvs, ...). The button would, just like Youtube / Dailymotion / VImeo ones allow the user to switch between various streams such as 240p, 340p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, ... the available options should be pre-selected by admin / user in the options for all medias / for type / ... This will greatly improve user experience when using mobile & various quality / bandwidth internet access.
- Another thing to consider is that the cpu usage of NAS (raid5 - atom d510 dual core 1.8ghz - gb eth / lan playback-) tells me the streams are transcoded live right now in PMS. A good solution I think should be to have the option of pre-transcode and store different streamable versions. These would be generated by the user or automatically for all the library / certain folders / media type / new medias only... given the cpu usage of these tasks, it could also be good to have an option to make them run in the background with low (or better, configurable) cpu priority (it is a requirement for slow servers like single core cpus I believe...). This will greatly improve user experience when connecting to a low-speed cpu PMS.
