A simple web to VLC Firefox addon (Windows and Linux) or a plex web external player for VLC

Hay guys, guessing people have made quite a few of these but I wanted to have a go at making my own.
Its basically a very very simple Firefox addon, in which when you’re browsing plex and you are at a episode or movie you want to watch, instead of hitting that play button and playing it within Firefox, you instead press the orange triangle button and play it within VLC instead.

(For linux users you will have to click on firefox options, and tick the linux option.)

The addon can be found here (its already been signed by firefox for safety):

I know its a supppeeerrr simple addon, but if anyone is interested I am happy to upload it to the Firefox addon area.
Also would like to add functionality such as automatically placed as watched when button is pressed.

I’ve only tested this at home, and on local media so I have no idea if it will work for others. Would love to hear if it does work or not for you!!

(Note: VLC must be preinstalled in original install location)

Thanks All

Now on Firefox through a preliminary review: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/crumby-plex-to-vlc/

Great extension. Works well.
When do you think you’ll be able to add function to trigger the “mark as watched” setting in Plex.

Perfect!
I have been Suffering from “odd/random caching issues” on Plex player, so this allows me to keep using the nice Plex interface but use the reliable VLC player of playback.

Oh how I want this to work on W10, but it doesn’t seem to be. Is there any way to troubleshoot what it going on with it?

Are you using a 64bit version of VLC, his code only seems to target the 32bit version in the program files (x86) folder.

The problem is that I had VLC installed on a drive other than the C drive. Evidently, it wants the installation in the default directory. Works like a charm now that I have reinstalled VLC

Any chance we can have this addon working on a Mac? Pretty please?

Hi guys, apologies I haven’t been here for a while, I’m glad to see its been useful for some people, and that people have gotten it to work. Your comments are very helpful for me, and they’re all things I can definitely fix. I’m wondering if people still use the addon since plex media player (PMP) is now out for non plex pass users also?

If people are still interested in the fixes, let me know and I’ll definitely work on them.

If I do add fixes it will likely be a button location change (so the button will be on the plex page and not on the firefox toolbar 24/7 hopefully cleaning up the toolbar a bit)
Also the mac/linux and alternative install location (along with 64bit) install fixes where I can add in settings a custom location for people to put their own VLC location.

Cheers all.
