So funny.
Same issue with my daughter and her roommates at college. The new interface is confusing and a step backward in basic functionality.

Reading this thread reminds me of my long ago days over at the Telltale Games forums.
You see, I’m a huge Monkey Island fan, and Telltale Games started out by making LucasArts-style point-and-click adventure games. Well, after a time, it became apparent that they were really more interested in the almighty dollar than loyalty to the current fanbase, and would sacrifice current fans on the altar of appealing to the masses. (see also: dirt-easy Back to the Future and The Walking Dead:The QTE Experience)
Whether you personally like TTG’s newer games isn’t the point. The point is that the quest for the almighty dollar is what motivates more than anything, and a vast majority of the market prefers ease-of-use over customizability (see also: Apple).
tl;dr: I’ve heard this story before. You’re a niche market and Plex wants bigger fish because money talks.
Anyone else here familiar with Javascript? A browser extension would take care of a lot of these complaints. Wouldn’t be overly hard to add the ability to customize and tweak. We’re power users and I’d bet we already use for more plugins, extensions, or tweaks than the average user already. In my mind this isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

When one is making a tool that people need, one-size-fits all is a feasible (if less than ideal) approach to design. Plex, on the other hand, is a tool for hobbyists – and a great tool at that. Before diving too far into the “let’s make it easy enough for anyone to use” market, consider your potential competition: YouTube, plastic disks, iTunes/Amazon/Netflix, and just simple OS file browsers (Finder, Explorer, etc…).
Plex has always required users to be at least somewhat organized with their source media (and to follow Plex’s specific organizational guidelines). none of the competing media infrastructures have this requirement, meaning that anyone without the mildly OCD-ish organizational tendencies required to use Plex, is unlikely to start using it. In short, Plex foks: Your software is targeted at an audience consisting of people who like things to work like they want them to. Please recognize this and stop taking away options for configuration and customization.
So we got a Plex employee and a Plex ninja complaining about the direction Plex is taking now… Beautiful.
LOL, this thread is over a year old and I wasn’t a Ninja then. Not that it would matter. We are allowed to have an opinion just like everyone else. SURPRISE but Ninja’s and Employees don’t always like every feature or the particular way the feature was implemented.
Granted you probably won’t always read about it hear but we aren’t fans of everything. It’s the nature of the beast with something as complex interface wise as Plex.
BTW, it’s no secret how I feel about customization. I like to be in control of what is and what isn’t shown to users of my system. Just because some hot new feature is added to Plex doesn’t mean I want to use it, so I believe I should be able to control if said feature is available/shown or not.
Case in point is the “newish” Movie Trailer “feature” that is added to the Movie Dashboard on many clients. I personally find it weird to be there. To me it’s confusing since I’ve got tons of movies and then bam a section for viewing upcoming movies that I might already have. The user can only view the trailer but can’t play the movie if it’s on the system. Just feels out of place to me and I wish I could turn it off SERVER side so no clients see it.
My personal views on Horizontal Scrolling vs Vertical Scrolling haven’t changed and I think everyone who knows me, knows I don’t like HS. But I also realize I’m just one person and their could be 10x people that feel the opposite on many things. However if it’s a feature that could simply be turned off or on then why not? (which was the intent of this thread).
One thing to keep in mind is that Plex allows people in the forums to speak their mind and opinions and does listen/read this info even if you think they don’t.
Most of this is all small potatoes in the scheme of things because Plex keeps getting better and better over time.

Lol saw April and thought it was from this year… No idea how this came up for me!? Agree with your points, obviously not everyone in the company is always of the same opinion… But I don’t remember seeing Plex employees/ninjas openly critic on the forums.
Anyways, back to this year’s topics
sorry about that.
Oh, I certainly don’t care this resurfaced. Options are good and allow customization which I’m always for. What else can we say? LOL
Hi,
Can we please have more control over the dashboard/homepage per user.
As some users are only interested in TV Shows they haven’t watched or Movies that are only in a certain category.
If you can add a feature where a Wordpress-like editing on the web UI is possible and is the same on all other devices that would make Plex the single most impressive media manager compared to the competition.
Cheers
