No More Manual Home Screen After April 22nd?!?!?

I was just greeted by a pop-up telling me that a “new experience” was coming 4/22 and would replace my manual home screen with a “curated experience” and I have NO CHOICE in this matter. Is this correct? I cannot find any announcements here and nor a description in-app…or even an option to enable it now that I have declined.

We have negatitve interest in a “curated experience” and the idea that I will be unable to control the content on the homescreen of my own device makes me very unhappy.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Did I miss read?

This is coming up a lot in conversations about the multiple “recently added” and the combined Continue Watching and On Deck hubs. There are more controls for the automated display for admins to manage now to control what appears for you and shared users on home and in library display (check the Settings->Library->Manage Library) and in those threads Plex folks have said that additional controls for setting the automated layouts will be coming as well before the removal of the manual setups. You might dig around those threads a bit but not a lot of info has been forthcoming other than comments about more features and more flexibility.

Optimistically - a lot of the manual options will become less client specific and more server side.

But… we’re still kinda waiting.

I think they only say that you can’t change the user’s home screen if it was manually set up

For users who choose an automatically managed experience, I’m fine with this. The new “continue watching” feature also sounds nice and a natural evolution/merger of on-deck and continue watching, saving real estate and feels natural.

But what got my dander up was when I saw a dialog that implied that there would be no more manual experience AT ALL. That is not acceptable. Having more control about what is automatically selected on the server end is still pretty rude. Why should my family have to suffer with whatever layout I impose on them?

I really wish I could simply re-read the options I was presented. I was just trying to watch the news this morning and clicked past them and now cannot go back to review my options.

Using the latest bundled webapp in the newest public server release you now have this:

Those are the only options you have.
Most of us are - less than optimistic about our future.

It would be wise at this point to switch to Automatic - and try to find out how to deal with it. We’re tied to the tracks and a runaway train is quickly approaching.

I saw this in later dialogs, but also saw that “manual setup” was going away altogether…there were conflicting statements

Weird, I do not see this at all and am Lifetime Plexpass on latest version. What platform are you running your server on?

I think the fact manual setup is going away isn’t being well presented.

I’m using automated already so don’t mind it, but do appreciate the new options to have more controls for the automated layouts.

You’ll need to be on latest Plex Preview I believe to see the additional controls and you have to hover on the specific library to get the button to expand those checkboxes out as well.

Windows.

The new stuff comes with the newest Server:

…or at least it did for me on Windows.
(the only place you see that is where indicated - in settings/Libraries - as shown)

Huh… I’m actually on 1.22.2.4262 and my options have disappeared … gonna go update again to see if it comes back… might need to refresh my page or restart the server.

Ah, that might explain it. Looks like they are now rolling things out for Windows before Linux. I guess I’m glad I didn’t opt for the new frontend being that I’d have no way to control it from the back end. That would have been infuriating.

You need to use the hosted web app, as always, to get the newest stuff. https://app.plex.tv

Also… you must roll your mouse over there before the new options appear.
(another annoyance - but there you go)

I’ll keep it in mind, thanks!

Since I’m not interested in using the hosted web app it looks like I’ll have to wait and see once it arrives server-side for Linux.

That was what I forgot about it… web vs hosted. Thanks!

I went there, and got the popup, and said activate…
And it looks the same as before to me. My own movies and tv shows pinned on the left.

My setup is pretty basic\standard so nothing actually changed for me either - but I can change some of it now. My Home Screen I pretty much left alone but I did change up how the Recommended section of my TV and Movie Library looks and that was useful (originally there were rows I didn’t care about and I was able to sort them to my liking).

For real, have you said anything positive about plex ever?

I get not being happy about the direction plex is going in but I see you a lot here and it’s mostly just negativity across all posts you make.

On the dialog it says that x,y, and z will not work if you have a manual homepage…which I’m entirely ok with. You get what you get when you setup a manual homepage…but what was unclear to me is if the manual homepage was going away altogether. The way I read it is that after April 22nd, there will be no more manual homepage and the homepage will forced to the “automatic” setup, but there will be additional controls for that content. I still disapprove of this idea, because some of my users want a certain look and others like it their way…why should I have to choose/force for everyone?

The current setup on most of our devices is pretty simple:
Continue Watching
On Deck
Recently Added TV
Recently Added Movies

That’s it.

Some day I’ll move from MythTV over the the PLEX DVR, I’m sure, but for now the programming search and filters lack way too many capabilities; albeit a lot nicer UI, but I digress…

I think the combinding of Continue Watching and On Deck make sense, so I’m ok with that, but I don’t wany anything on my homepage other than the above content and the menu bar. This goes doubly for older users who are not technically savvy.

I’m very surprised that a major feature change like this doesn’t have anything pinned in the “announcements” or a page detailing what is changing. I had one opportunity to “Learn More” and now cannot revisit. That’s pretty lame. For all I know it will be a non-event and I’m concerned over nothing…or maybe it will completely upend our viewing experience. Who can tell?

@OttoKerner: Can you shed any more light here?

I am using automated Home Screen and what you show is what I have on my home screen (with pinned sources). With the new server options available per library that can be adjusted.

Also, this final note from Plex employee on the OD\CW Experiment thread is helpful as well: Universal Continue Watching (experimental feature) - #80 by chrisc
