Add a podcast ?!

Sorry to post a question that seems like it should be basic, but I have spent a few hours trying to figure out how I can add a podcast to my plex channel list on my server. I can't seem to find anyway to add a podcast to plex unless a channel already exists (npr, daily show, etc.).  I'd really appreciate it if someone can point me in the right direction.

Podcasts can not be added as a channel. Channels are a software packages with code to fetch video/audio/pictures from different sources, such as websites. A podcast-feed is just a xml stream. One could possibly make a channel that makes it possible to add podcast feeds though, inside that channel :) .

Thanks for your reply UD. Let me clarify my poorly worded question. I want to add podcasts to plex. I found it challenging to locate a way to do this. Is there a way to do this currently (aside from coding my own channels...which I am not opposed to...but I'd rather not be redundant if there is an easy way to add podcasts already)?

I stumbled upon the 'my feeds' channel. Is using a channel (as you suggest) the only way to add rss/xml feeds? I had assumed there would be an easy way to add rss/podcasts to plex...but my assumption (obviously) might be incorrect.

Thanks again for help from the community.

I hope there are some plans to include podcasts.  We don't all have connections that can stream well so having them downloaded over night is the only solution.  Using itunes is a poor alternative.

What I did/plan on doing:

  1. Install gPodder, Juice, or some other rss feed downloader/manager on your PMS machine—The aforementioned apps are fully cross-platform. Set yours up with your podcast feeds of choice and run it on an interval to keep your podcasts up-to-date.
  2. Create a Music section on your PMS and point it to the top-level folder gPodder/Juice downloads to
  3. (Haven't done this yet) Create a custom scanner and metadata agent to use the folder & filenames of podcasts to display your files in an organized way.

As it stands, without step 3, you can access your up-to-date podcasts via Plex, though many providers don't tag their files accurately (or at all), so the 'artist' or 'album' views will look like a mess.

Before finding your post, I tried gpodder to get the TWiT video podcasts. The only problem I then had is that if I set the folder as TV shows, since there aren't seasons, Plex gets very confused.

what I would need to fix my setup is a podcast type (or maybe two: one for audio podcasts, and the other for video podcasts) and it would need to know how to get the meta data somehow.

The real solution is to have a built in way to automatically download podcasts based on the xml feed url.

I would also like a way to add a podcast to plex I mean it can stream movies to my tv why can't it stream podacasts to my tv?

I would also like a way to add a podcast to plex.  The TWIT network would be great on it.  Right now I added a twit folder and I use juice for the downloading.  Everything works fine, but it would be create to have a metadata and the cover art.  I agree the only solution here would be to have a built in way.

I just added folders for each podcast and download them to the selected folders. Just make sure your original folder you add is a music folder and rename it podcasts. My podcasts get cover art when I scan for updates. I have several of the TWiT podcasts. I do have one that doesn't tag the files and I have to tag them manually when I download them and add the cover art. Just make sure your artist and contributing artist are the same for all your files in each folder and they will sort abd show cover art correctly.

There is a TWIT.tv plugin in the channels in your case.

I created a library with the "home video" type and added the podcast folder from Itunes.  It doesn't do cover art very well and it includes random new videos in my recent feed but it is a decent way to include video podcasts so I can watch them on my Roku.  A direct channel would be nice though. Maybe just a DLNA reader.

Most of the TWiT podcasts will work since they are now in thetvdb database. I have been adding the missing shows and episodes. I get fanart and metadata just fine. I submitted some of the shows’ theme music too. Only way I got Plex to see the episodes properly is add a few text to the filenames like “tnss0001_h264m_1280x720_1872.mp4” to “tnss_S01E0001_h264m_1280x720_1872.mp4”

I have seperate Library called “Podcasts Video” as tv shows type and then have the folder structures setup like this since they are seasonless podcasts (there’s no season sub-folders), but have to rename the files as mentioned above to make Plex figure out what number is the episode number:
Plex_Share/Podcasts/The New Screen Savers

This functionality has been requested for quite some time now. It’s seems to be such a basic functionality. Any word on if and/or when they plan on implementing it?

I am bumping this thread in the hopes that the development team notes how long this feature request has been out there, and that there continues to be interest. I would be happy enough just to have a channel that I could configure with one (or hopefully more) raw URLs for the feed. I don’t need a whole catalog or discovery service.

Yeah… Or at least the ability to store audio and video files in a separate library and have the same watched/unwatched tracking as we do for videos.
