Add music library or not?

I have a PMS with about 600 movies and TV shows with no music added yet. I have a pretty large music collection and would love to have the benefit of being managed by Plex, but I’m concerned about adding so much content to my database and overall system. I’m worried about performance of processes that can be affected by the size or complexity of the database.

What is the general opinion of advanced users and/or Plex regarding this issue? Am I better off from a performance/problem issue keeping my database small and only managing movies or would adding 10’s of thousands of music items to it have little overall effect?

I wouldn’t think there’d be any issue. Granted I only have about 2000 songs on my plex, but really it just downloads any metadata it might need and keeps it in its internal database, which I would not expect to be an issue. Once its in the database, Plex doesn’t really do anything else until you browse/play the music.

Plex handles music decently well, IMO, though i do have a few gripes. As of right now I have 44,958 tracks. I’m in the process of converting my library to a premium library… all this means is basically ADDING a new library, and indicating that it’s a premium library. This is one of my gripes… You can’t convert a regular music library to a premium. My original music library that i’ve been maintaining will need to be deleted after the premium library is in good shape… it’s been updating metadata for the past day. Artist, Track, and album ratings will need to be redone, as well as playlists.

While it’s been processing this data, i’ve been listening to music with no issue. i will admit though when loading my music library there’s a slight lag on loading the artist thumbnails. Once all metadata is loaded this shouldn’t be a problem.

Are you a plex pass member? If not do you plan on becoming one? I would suggest, if you are THINKing of getting plex pass if you don’t have it already, WAIT on loading your music. If you have it, then load them.

Plex has the library and time machine radios which are great, but one thing i’m absolutely loving is “Plex Mix” (premium feature). I simply go to a song (i.e. Papercut by Linkin park) and from the context menu select Play Plex Mix… It plays songs from similar artists of similar genre/style. I listen to music DAILY. and normally i listen to music album by album adding songs i really like to ever growing playlists (one sits at 1200 songs right now). With Plex pass you can sync (although it’s not a solid working feature) to a streaming device. i sync my 1200 playlist to my phone to listen to on the go.

Thanks much for taking the time to explain your experiences.

I have no issues with
98k songs in 2700 albums with about 2000 artists.
Also 1300 movies
700 tv shows

I will say the scan of my music library is not fast because of number of files and directories when I add content I usually just let the scan run and if finishes after a while over night usually.
