I think it would be great if movie collections functioned more like TV Shows with respect to On Deck logic.
If I were new to the On Deck feature, just guessing at how it works, I would expect to see Anchorman 2 appear there right after completing Anchorman 1.
This would also be a time-saver for movies in collections which are not explicitly ordered in the title. Watching the Bond movies in order practically requires a Wikipedia check each time, Harry Potter and the TNG Star Trek movies are further examples. Come on, this is 2014, I shouldn't have to manually remember which Bourne movie goes first... sheesh...
Granted this is the epitome of a first world problem and if this is what I have to complain about, then things are pretty great, but this does seem like a no-brainer after adding the collections functionality - LOVE the implementation of that 10x better than the DVD stacks from XBMC.
Not sure why anyone wouldn't want this to happen, but I can't imagine the implemenation is much more difficult than:
for movie in movies:
if movie.last_watched >= on_deck.cutoff_date:
if (movie.collection is not None and movie.collectionindex < movie.collection.length):
not sure if i would use it, but that is certainly and interesting request.
( i actually just watched Dark Knight last night because i felt like seeing some Joker action. but i have no desire to watch Dark Knight Rises any time soon)
if you plan on watching more than one I would make a Playlist of them. i know Playlists are not in all clients yet but hopefully soon and i imagine they would get having playlist in all clients before adding a new feature)
@dtrobson099 I think the main problem here is that Plex doesn't know which movie comes next unless you manually create and re-order the collection. However this would be an excellent addition to this request: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/81160-movie-collections/ .
@BigWheel In answer to your point about not wanting to watch the next movie, I think that would be easily solved by having it only apply to unwatched movies (perhaps a toggleable option, for those of us that frequently re-watch entire series).
The problem with Playlists is that they are sorted by the order that you add items. So you have to figure out the correct order yourself, which can be cumbersome at best and a straight-up deal-breaker if the playlist is large (I’d hate to manually sort out the correct order for all James Bond movies, and I’ve seen even bigger collections than that).
Plus, a Playlist doesn’t really do what the OP is describing anyway. It’s not just about having them all in one place. We want to watch a movie, take a break, come back the next day, and have the sequel queued up in “On Deck” just like TV show episodes get queued up. Playlists won’t do that.
This was definitely true when this post was made 6+ years ago. But we’ve now got the option to manually remove items from “On Deck” (or at least, the option is coming). So if you watch a title and the sequel gets queued up, it doesn’t have to sit in “On Deck” forever.
I know this post is old. I don’t care, I want this option with Collections.
I would absolutely love it if Plex featured the next movie in “Continue Watching” if it’s part of a collection that a user watched a film from.
Even cooler would also be to have a YouTube-like option to select the next movie in a series based on collections when the credits hit at the end of a film (and maybe a quick toggle to ‘Mark as Played’ or something as well if they want to skip or have seen it already). I think Netflix and other streaming services kind of do this now as well with the next in a series or a related film.
Anyone wanting to crap on this idea just save it… it’s only a suggestion…chill
The Plex home screen will show a movie that has only partially been played so quickly allow you to continue watching.
It would be great to have the same capabilities when watching a collection. For example, if I play a collection and after the first movie take a break, I’d like to see a continue watching option for the collection on the home screen
I know what is asking. it was only a suggestion on what they could do then ( I wrote that before I worked here). If i thought it was not a legitimate request i would have closed this long ago.
I would love the option to manually configure the recommendations. I live for the manual labor in building a solid clean library and maintain it with cusom poster, collections and a lot more. I’m sure I’m not the only one out there doing that.
So yeah I would defs spend a few hours to set manual popups for movies and series if given the choice. But like setting collections, this should be an optionally manual process. Maybe not a thing which shows up on all movies but certainly the ones which deserve a viewer recommendation to watch next.
In context to the original poster asking about the “Next Movie” in the On Deck logic, it would be nice to configure the recommendations manually. So for a temporary amount of time, say, Spider-Man 2 will show in the On Deck area or in a new “suggested” area near the to of a users home, if they have just finished watching Spider-Man (1).
But what I was saying is to have that customizable on the server owner side would be great.
There are many types of collections to be had… by genre, director, actor, sagas (Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc…), themes, etc…
If a collection is primarily movies, it may be impractical for most to do continuous play, although if you’re binge watching Star Wars movies on each May 4th….
However, collections with shorter videos (Looney Tunes, Little Rascals, Three Stooges, Tom & Jerry, etc…) lend themselves quite well for continuous play
I feel we need a preference, per collection, that we can switch if we want to, to allow continuous play like TV Shows, for collections.
Description:
Currently, the “Continue Watching” section in Plex only allows resuming individual movies or episodes. It would be useful to add:
Seasons and incomplete shows also stay in the Continue Watching. So if you start and finish one episode of a show the next episode will appear in Continue Watching.
