[Implemented] Add support for av1 coding standard

YouTube has begun rolling out the av1 coding standard on its videos. At least one video downloader passes this through to the final file, making it incompatible with Plex until converted to a compatible format (can be done with VLC). Adding this open, royalty-free video coding format, would retain compatibility going forward

I verified the problem with Android TV (my main TV viewing platform) before I posted. (Version 7.28.0.15501, as reported by the device.)

Yep, got the same issue across all my devices, (Android, Debian, Windows). I used HandBrake to convert them to h.264, but this is pretty annoying as it takes forever copy files to my main computer, convert them and then copy them back. To be fair, enough modern media players nowadays still don’t support av1.

Came here to post the same. Grabbed you new YouTube videos and they’re all encoded with AV1. Plex needs to support this codec.

Fyi, Emby has no problems playing AV1 videos.

I didn’t mean to imply PlexDev was deficient in any way. But if we don’t ask for the feature, they’ll never know some of us want it.

Also have the same issue, on both Plex for Desktop and Plex on Android.

I have the same issue, Plex can’t play AV1 videos but VLC does for the records.
PlexDev, we want to see our favourite Plex able to play AV1 videos so please fix it in your future updates.

They are probably waiting waiting until AV1 is in it’s final stage before implementing it. That being said I would like to see this feature soon.
Bothersome to have good quality content that you can’t play back.
“Cannot convert this item. Implementation for video decoder ‘av1’ not found.”
