I’ve been adding music to plex, I have a very large library and for the second time now after things trucking along fine, the scanner seems to hang. Each folder is a basically CD. In the “MUSIC” folder I’ve created sub folders by letter so “A” for artists that start with A, “B”, etc. I am a plex pass user, but I have all the added features shut off and using the “use local tags if present” option, with the agents set to PERSONAL MEDIA first as opposed to Last FM.
When adding CDs, I’ve been adding between 20-50 folders at a time, running a scan, and after about 15-20 minutes they artists appear in PLEX. After I’ve done this for about 100-150 folders, I’ve been doing the “Plex Dance” before adding any more.
I’ve twice now tried adding a Various Artist folder where the “Artist” tags are all different, but the ALBUM ARTIST tag are all the same. It’s a top 500 tracks, so it has 500 mp3 files in it. It seemed to completely hang the scanner, so I stopped the scan, removed the folder. did the plex dance and ran a full SCAN LIBRARY on the whole Plex database. It all ran smooth. I tried adding 100 tracks from that folder to a created folder and the scanner again hanged, so I removed them, redid the dancem etc.
I have now tried adding 4 different folders from a different artist, and the scanner is spinning. not finding anything. This is the second time this happened. The first time it did this, I ended up removing all my folders, blanking the library completely and starting again adding smaller amounts at a time thinking maybe that was the problem, but I’ve again hit the wall.
How are people adding large music libraries to plex? I actually kind of hate how plex adds music, but I now need to so I can stream music at work.
Are you sure you don’t have created a Premium music library?
Because that’s what happens if you throw am insanely large “album” at the Gracenote scanner. It will time out while testing for every possible combination of tracks in that folder if they resemble any known album in the Gracenote database.
Thank you for the response. I didn’t think I set up a premium library, but I may have. there is a Gracenote level option when I look in the advance area. It’s set at the default, I’m scared to turn it off in case it craters future scans and I have to start all over with this stupid thing.
I have been playing with this and have kind of found a work around. If the scanner jams, I can remove the files I added prior to the scanner jam, then do a plex dance, then close down and restart Plex on my qnap, then do a plex dance and a library scan, and then do add more tracks into the folder. That said, I’ve been adding them 11 or so at a time and scanning and had to do the plex dance about 3 times before I gave up on it around the 250 out of 500 mark as it’s just too time consuming. It feels like Plex has a track limit per folder, which is stupid as the prior local player I was using handled this stuff fine but sadly it’s not available for the Qnap.
Either you divide the tracks of this folder up into the real separate artists and albums
or
you delete this premium library and create a last.fm library instead.
(You can’t change the type of a music library)
Thanks again for clarifying. The one thing I wasn’t thinking is that the premium feature would not allow various artist folders. I bought the plex pass because it was supposed to be needed to unlock full trancoding power on my NAS, I now use no other feature haha. Kind of ridiculous!
I’ve created a new MUSIC tab and set it up non-premium with “Personal” selected as opposed to last fm. I’m okay with quick and dirty, I can clean it up good enough for my uses.
