Adding Track filtering to mobile devices and not only Computers.

Hello Plex Members and employees!
I have a music library on my computer, where i download Songs from Soundcloud.
I sort that library on the date created, so that the latest Songs are on Top of that list/folder.
On my notebook i can sort the Plex library too, so my latest tracks are on top.
But as soon as i want to listen to some songs on my IOS device i can only sort it by latest album or latest artist, witch isn’t that pleasing. I would really appreciate it, if that feature could be included in the Plex-App.

Thanks for everything

I don’t know whether filtering will be added to the mobile clients eventually.

But here is a workaround for your specific request:

  • open Plex Web (also called the ‘Media Manager’)
  • got into your library with your downloaded songs
  • let it display ‘by track’ (1)
  • do not click on any individual track at this time!
  • fold out the filter menu (‘hamburger’ icon on the left side action bar)
  • SORT by Date Added desc. (2)
  • click on ‘Add To Playlist’, name it, save it

You just created a ‘smart’ playlist which auto-updates as soon as you add new stuff to this library. Then on your iOS device select this playlist for playback.

Thanks Sir @OttoKerner

That really helped out allot!

Hello Again @OttoKerner

I have one more question about the Music filtering…
Your trick really helped out and worked!
But since yesterday the order is completely messed up!?
In my windows library it’s still in a perfect order with the latest songs on top.
But as soon as i go in to Plex, it’s in an alphabetic order again?
Would you know how to fix it?

What do you mean by “go into Plex”? Do you mean the Plex app on your iDevice?
If so, I haven’t got a clue. I don’t use this app myself. If you say that the playlist is alright on the server, but not in the iOS app, then there must be something wrong with the app.

The best chances for an answer would be in the iOS app subforum. Please ask there.

@OttoKerner

It’s the web app that doesn’t show the correct order.
In my windows library the order is perfect sorted by date. But in the Plex web app its sorted by Alphabetic so i can’t create a smart playlist…?

I am not sure what you mean. The playlist we created still has the sorting order applied to it when you inspect it under Playlists in Plex Web, doesn’t it?

A screenshot would be helpful.

@OttoKerner

It’s really weird. Before yesterday the order in the Plex web App was still correct like in my Windows folder?

judging by the time stamps, you added a lot of files at once.
But the ‘Date added’ for Plex is the time when the music library got updated. And it then gobbled those new files all at once, most likely not in the order they were copied onto disk but something else.

If you had added the files one-by-one and updated the library after each single file, it would still work as expected. But if you add several files at once, the outcome is kinda unpredictable.

@OttoKerner

Is there a way how i could put all the songs at once in that library, instead of putting one song by another in that folder…?
[By the way, i really appreciate your work hear i don’t know what i would do without you :)>-

Only by deleting the library and recreating it new. If you let it scan your music folder in the course of the library creation, file timestamps are being used to fake the ‘Added to’ time.

@OttoKerner

Hello Again,
I’m really frustrated… I have tried out every possible way i can think of to get it sorted out again.
I even threw a new Windows on my server. But it still won’t sort my Songs in the “Correct” order.
Would you happen to know something i could do?

Only as I said in my previous post.

  1. Erase library
  2. Clean bundles (this can take a while, wait at least half an hour)
  3. Optimize database
  4. recreate library and add the folder (must be in one step, this is crucial)

steps 2 & 3 thrown in for lack of other ideas, really

@OttoKerner

I’ve tried everything out like you said. Sadly it’s still not working.
It might be a Bug. It won’t Sort them Alphabetically either.
But that should work automatically…?

Anyways, thanks for All your Help!
I really Appreciate all the Effort!
