Advice on Plex home setup

Hi guys,

I’m a newbie when it comes to Plex. And i’m kinda lost here at the moment.

I’ve done a bit of research, watched a ton of youtube vids, but i can’t figure out the basics of my new Plex setup. So i hope i’ve come to the right place;)

The goal

  • To play 4K movies (including raw gopro 4K clips) on my LG 55C7V tv. Just one directplay/stream at the time.
  • Have a Nas-like solution for the rest of my files.

The question
What is the best way to go?

1 get a NAS (+/- €350 not incl HDD) and a NVIDIA Shield TV (or similar).

2 get a NAS (+/- €350 not incl HDD) and a run Plex app on the LG.

3 get a mid range pc setup, with a CPU (Intel Core i3 8100 or similar) and a bit of RAM, a eco power supplie. Run Freenas and run the Plex app on the LG.

4 get a mid range pc setup, with a CPU (Intel Core i3 8100 or similar) and a bit of RAM, a eco power supplie. Run Freenas and get a NVIDIA Shield TV (or similar).

5 get big CPU (rizen 2700x or similar) and a bit of RAM. Run Freenas and the Plex app on the LG.

6 get big CPU (rizen 2700x or similar) and a bit of RAM. Run Freenas and get a NVIDIA Shield TV (or similar).

I don’t know if option 1 - 4 will run 4k vids or that i need the big bad CPU and/or the NVIDIA Shield (or similar). All the above are options for me. But if i can save money or the initial setup and power cost, why not.

Thanks, Bob

Thanks @trumpy81. So no need for a strong cpu as long as you can use direct play.

Than it matters what type of files i download, either or not the Shield can direct play them.
Do you find in ‘real life’ that most of the files can be played by the shield?

Oke i will. Thanks.

  1. Store your media files on Google Drive (Unlimited storage as part of G Suite for Business for $10/€8/£6.60 per month). Buy a cheap i3 ex-corporate PC from eBay ($100-200) for your server. As a client use MrMC on an Apple TV 4K or Nvidia Shield.
