Hello Everyone,
I am looking to create the Ultimate Plex Server for mainly 1080p with extremely smooth 4K support when I want to watch the occasional movie in 4K i.e. 20GB movie file with perfect ease.
I am moving into a new home and will be starting from scratch. I have a healthy budget however, it’s not unlimited. Also, I want something in between. I do not need anything near the best however, I do not want to have the worst ether. Something in between is fine with me.
For right now what I am looking at is building a really nice and reasonable NAS server, have everything over wifi and go from there.
It’s a new home and I can run Ethernet Cables if needed however, I want to take my time and grow into the Ultimate reasonable Plex Server setup. Buying one or two quality pieces of equipment at a time. Not just for managing budget and expectations but research time and quality installation. i.e. Mounting the TV, setting up the correct wiring and/or ethernet cables, etc.
Here are a few thoughts:
-Buy a NEW Epic Gaming Router, idk something around 700 bucks
-Buy Synology 2 bay NAS DiskStation DS220+ to get started, maybe put two 16 TB Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB Enterprise NAS in it
-Use my Nvidia Shield to power everything at the moment, lol.
-Buy a new $5,000 TV that has the plex App and use that to connect to the shield
I know the Nvidia shield is the weakest link here however, I am just getting started with NAS and want to keep it simple. Eventually I would like to research and build the ultimate plex computer server. However, I like the foot print of the shield and the energy consumption. Do not even notice it is there. I do know though that the Shield is not that powerful and running 4K or multiple streams out classes this machine.
-I will need to research building or buying a prebuilt pc just to run plex
Final Thoughts
I am coming to you to see if I should head in a different direction, re think some things, I am open to whatever you suggest. I would prefer not to buy a few thousand dollars’ worth of equipment just to realize that my setup is all wrong.
Bottom line. I hate commercials. I love streaming digital content. Looking for a server and setup that can handle a HUGE amount of digital content and stream mainly 1080p over wifi on multiple devices with ease. However, if I really want to watch that occasional great movie in 4K on the main screen I want to be able to do that with ease. I do not want my Internet, wifi speed or processing power to bog me down and have that spinning wheel of death on my screen. Ever!
