Alexa access to PLEX system

PLEX lifetime user. Have had PLEX Server operational on our NAS for many years. The interface from Amazon Fire TV works and is suitable for our home environment. Stuff can be displayed to the local TV with the FireTV device.

This question gets at a functionality I would like and might even exist but i do not know.

I would like to use a voice command to Alexa to play music from the PLEX server without FireTV involved.

Something like “Alexa, go to local PLEX server and locate the “xyz” playlist for music and play it”

Is this possible or is there a third party app that could do same?

Something like this?

Thank you for the link. I now have Alexa access to my music area.

For those who may look at this thread…
Workstation will not work for the Alexa setup. You must use a tablet device or possibly a phone device. In short, Amazon has decided that workstations are not to be considered for the Alexa skills area.

  • Select link option after skill search in Alexa – use SILK browser for easier process
  • Enter your PLEX Account Username – ??? DO NOT use the email information
  • Enter password – be careful since you will no be able to view except for one letter

Translation between Alexa and PLEX is awkward at best…

  • Genre’s do not seem to work
  • Artists work with a specific phrase
  • Albums work if very specific
  • Playlists work with exact name

Must ‘refresh’ UI to see new items or playlists

I see lots of threads regarding music metadata and various issues. Hopefully this will work out over time.

The ability to skip forward or replay would be nice.
