I had to laugh, because this is pretty much where I am at trying to control my Plex Server via my FIRE TV 4K.
Questions:
Is this really as good as it gets?
My FIRE TV keeps telling me to set up Plex on my phone. Why?
If I buy the Plex Pass Lifetime, will anything change with voice commands on FIRE TV?
Can I create a Playlist that I can activate with voice commands to play a specific video? (I tried, but Alexa said “not supported”.)
Background: I have my Plex Server running, and I can access it from my FIRE TV. Movies play fine if I manually select them with the remote. (And sitting 18" away from my 55" TV/monitor I can kinda do it. I’m legally blind. That’s the reason I started down this road. So I could watch exercise videos without asking my wife to turn everthing on, find the disk, find the remote, and use those tiny buttons to select and play/pause the videos.)
Has anyone used a Plex Player on an Amazon FIRE TV? OR with an Echo dot? Or with the Alexa app on an iPhone? I understand that their are “Skills” for Plex. Might they do better?
Is there another device that works well with voice commands?
That is what Plex for Alexa is, a skill which you need to enable and link to your plex account and your server needs remote access enabled Amazon.com: Plex : Alexa Skills
probably just to sign in or it is telling you to set up alexa but without knowing exact message and when it is appearing hard to say
No
I don’t understand why you would make a playlist to play a specific video. Just play the video. You can tell it to play a specific playlist or tell it play a specific movie etc. Info on the commands Alexa supports can be found here https://support.plex.tv/articles/236324808-alexa-voice-commands/
Hours later, I still can’t get Alexa to work with the Plex app on FIRE TV 4k.
I checked my Plex Server and it says it is available both privately and publically.
I have gone to the Alexa Web app and enabled the Alexa Skills for Plex.
I can say “Open Keith’s Plex” and the Fire TV 4k opens my server. I can browse my libraries with the remote cursor arrows. I can open a movie and play it.
If I ask Alexa “ask plex to play the same movie I just watched>” I am told “This is what I found…” and it isn’t the video on my Plex server. Rather, Alexa wants me to rent the movie…
Ditto if I just say “play ”.
I have changed my Plex account password, reinstalled the Plex app on the FIRE TV 4k, and un-enabled / reenabled the Alexa Skill for Plex.
I am using the FIRE TV 4k remote. I press the mic button and speak commands.
When I “ask plex to connect to Keiths Plex” I am told that I only have one server in my Plex account and that Keiths Plex is automatically connected.
If I say “open Keiths Plex” I am told OK.
If I “ask Plex to play Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scotts”, I am told that I do not have any media in my server. I am asked if I want to setup the Plex Video Player. I say “yes”. I am told there are no players on my network (?) and that a card has been placed in my Alexa app to help me out. (or something like that. I am swapping between HDMI ports between my FIRE stick and my computer…)
So if I use the FIRE remote keypad, I can select movies on my Plex server (Keiths Plex). I can play the movies. The issue does not appear to be my Plex server, but Alexa not being able to query what I have on my server(?).
I have my server configured for public access. I have enabled the manual port option as well. No difference.
I’ll be back to it tomorrow. I really want to get this working…
(And then I get to do it all over again with a NVDA Shield Pro. Happy days!)
I just uninstalled, re-downloaded, and linked the Plex app on my FRV4k. I re-enabled the Alexa Skills (and hence logged in to the Plex site using new credentials).
It still doesn’t work.
Is there a beta Plex app that I can install directly on my FTV4K?
