[Implemented] Allow "Collections" Tag for TV Show Episodes

The request: Don't remove "Collections" from the "Tags" section of TV Show episodes.

The Details:

I'm adding a TV show ("Good Eats") to my repository.  These DVDs do not come by season--they come by topic, so for example, the first disc has a show from season 2 and 2 shows from season 3, the next disc has 1 show from each of seasons 1-3, etc.

I am trying to follow Plex's naming convention for TV shows by naming each episode [Good Eats - sXXeYY - episode title.extension] and that is all working fine and dandy BUT I would ALSO like to be able to add each show to a collection that represents the disc I got it from ("Breakfast Eats", "Juicy Meats", etc.).  This way I could go into TV Shows -> Good Eats and then view by collection to help me find a show that I know was on a certain disc and/or watch a topic from different seasons.

For some reason, Plex does not show "Collections" in the "Tags" section for TV shows.  I realize that in most cases, grouping shows by show/season/episode is sufficient, but not always.

Another person on this forum was talking about the same thing--he wanted to add Loony Toons and have "collection" data based on which "best of" collection it came off of.

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/110326-tv-shows-from-best-of-type-dvd-collections/

Here is another mention of somebody else wanting the same thing (though it was not a feature request which is why I'm still adding this here): https://forums.plex.tv/topic/108131-cant-add-individual-tv-episodes-to-a-collection-anymore/

Good idea, well reasoned.

I would definitely appreciate the ability to do exactly this

if you would like me to change it back i will, but i changed the title to reflect it is for "Episodes" as there already is a collections tag for shows as a whole

No complaints here :)

I'd really like to see this too!

I have a Christmas movies collection so putting together a collection of Christmas TV episodes would be great too!

note you should be able to make a playlist of individual episodes like Christmas episodes which are saved.

I know it is not the same as a collection, and playlists are not supported in all clients yet. but may work in the meantime

Thanks, yes I was aware of this, I like the way collections work better for this kind of thing though.

I am brand new here, searching to see if my suggestion was already covered, and I think this is it.

I would like to be able to tag individual episodes for Collections. I love documentaries on specific subjects but because of the naming convention, I wind up with a bunch of generic-named Series (National Geographic, Frontline, Dateline, etc.) that contain episodes on the various subjects. I would like the individual episodes to go into the Collections, not the whole series.

I made Playlists, but they only show up on my computer, not my (SD)TV.

Thank you!

Lack of this feature really got in my way today. To me, half of Plex’'s usefulness is the ability to aggregate and filter. By limiting the amount of metadata for tv shows, it really hamstrings the whole process. Just my input on why I upvoted this.

This is a great idea. Travel shows like “Rick Steves’ Europe” could benefit from this as well. Shows about any particular country or region are spread across all 8 seasons of the show. It would be nice to create collections by country (France), or region (Loire), or city (Paris), that would gather episodes from all seasons.

I’m a bit confused here…
You can manually add tags to any episode which could then be searched for later on.
Click on TV Show - Season and click on pencil icon of the episode. Go to the Tag section and add whatever tag you want.
You should be able to filter for those tags to get your collection.

The only fields on the Tags page for a TV episode are Writers and Directors.

Expanding the fields used in tags, like genre, would be great to apply to an episode and not for an entire season. My collection of movies and TV shows now is ever expanding and the ability to filter via metadata is becoming more and more helpful.

As mentioned in some previous posts, it would be great to tag the episodes that have to do with Christmas, on the many different Seasons and Shows which I have collected over the years. I hope the Feature can get moved up and be added soon.

I added a new feature request for the same issue, but it was closed by the mods because this thread already exists. Too bad to see that this was already requested over 4 years ago and hasn’t been implemented. I would like to add this short list of usecases for the feature, and reiterate that I would also love to be able to make TV episode collections!

Examples of usecases:

  • Collection of cartoons grouped by main character in the episode (e.g. Donald Duck, Bugs Bunny)
  • Collection of holiday episodes (e.g. Halloween specials, Christmas specials)
  • Collection of episodes grouped by DVD instead of seasons (e.g. ‘best of’ dvds, themed dvds)
  • Collection of cooking show episodes by theme or technique (e.g. Chinese food, grilling)
  • Collection of kids show episodes teaching a certain concept (e.g. counting, sharing)
  • Collection of travel shows by destination (e.g. Europe, Japan)
  • Collection of nature shows featuring a specific animal (e.g. Planet Earth / Animal Planet eps featuring elephants)
  • Collection of documentary episodes with a certain topic (e.g. global warming, mental health)

I am aware that it is also possible to make playlists of episodes, but playlists do not allow you to add poster art, the layout once you select the playlist is always a list, the episodes are in a specific order, and they are user-specific (whereas collections are server-wide).

Just to add another voice. Classic Doctor Who episodes are listed sequentially at TheTVDB.com, which is fine and allows grouping by season.

But seasons were never the main organizational unit in Doctor Who - the “serial” was. For example, S01E01-04 are for “An Unearthly Child”, S01E05-11 are for “The Daleks” etc. It would be great to be able to reflect this with collections.

Added my vote. I want this feature so I can add holiday TV episodes to my holiday collections.

Whatever happened to this thread to be able to Tag individual episodes rather than seasons? Tis the season and I want to tag episodes with Christmas for example but the properties are not available and are currently tied to using Playlists. I would rather have a Genre field to populate for each episode so that it is more dynamic.

Also, it would be nice that if I created a collection/playlist that I had the ability to mass tag all of the items for each. Is there a metadata editor coming any time soon in which you can easily manipulate the metadata for any item in the library? This would be super helpful and a huge time saver in my mind.

It sounds like this might have been a feature but was removed. I’d really like to add my favorite TV episodes to my collection of movies for Christmas themed episodes. I’ve tried finding a way to do this in the forums but no luck until I stumbled on this thread. Please implement/bring back the ability to add TV episodes to Collections

I definitely vote, “Yes”, for this feature. Holidays, crossover episodes, etc. all beg for the ability to create collections that span multiple series as well as movies. Not only that, but I would also ask that the genre tags be available on the individual episodes, as well. Although a series may generally fall into one or two genres, often one or more episodes will also fall into additional genres. Many drama series, for example, may from time to time produce a comedy episode.

Not only that, but while I can create a collection for certain TV series, I don’t seem to be able to include any movies, and vice-versa. Shouldn’t a collection called, “Star Trek”, include all the Star Trek series and all the movies?
